Hi all! I am doing this as it's own thread, but if this is not the place for it, feel free to move it. I just wanted to make sure it got looked it, as I have some questions...okay! So I attended the Wheel Mobile event in Hinckley, Minnesota yesterday. Mind you, the Wheel Mobile (that lovely yellow bus!) only comes to our neck of the woods about once every four years, so this was a big deal to me. I have been on the show, back in 2006, but realllllly want to see my boyfriend and sister get on at some point, they are both very good, fun, competent puzzle solvers and would be outstanding on the show. All right, so we're at the casino where it's all taking place, and there are alot of people. The ballroom can seat 1800, but I never saw all the chairs full at any of the sessions. I am sure those who've been through this can vouch for the fact (and it all came back to me yesterday) that there sure are alot of duds out there. Now, I do not mean to be mean or harsh or talk bad about people, that's not nice, we all know it. However, in general, I have to say how disappointed I am with the people who were called to the stage; tons of bad letters called, people called out answers that did not fit with the puzzles, etc. And the interviews. Oh my Lord. It's like you could pretty much exchange one person for the next, they were that unmemorable. Like I say, sorry if I'm harsh, but that was what I witnessed yesterday. So many people who, by the time they reached the stage, still did not know what to do, or what they wanted to say. It was pretty painful, to say the least. One older guy wanted to give his turn to someone else; one guy came with his daughter--who really wanted to get called, but he did instead; one lady talked about her children, and in a NEGATIVE way; we had sob stories and Debbie Downers and an over the top lady with a neon green flower in her hair who wanted to converse with Marty in this ridiculous Italian-type accent. Mama Mia! Oh and one lady who, when she reached the stage, proceeded to pull a list out of her big purse to name EVERYTHING she liked. And I mean, she listed her favorite colors IN ORDER. It took SO long, the audience was groaning, you could tell Marty was itching to move things along. Side bar: Is this the case at most Wheel Mobile events? I've only been to the Minnesota one's and the people stay the same, if you know what I mean. Alright, so this is going on, and time is going by and neither my sister or boyfriend's names ever were called, so disappointing. Like I say, they'd both be great on the show! Our amazing host Marty, did his spiel about if your name is not called, don't worry, the names all go into the bin and get taken back to LA. I can vouch for the fact that this happens, I know a girl who did get a second audition this way, but did not make it through the whole thing. (This was after a Wheel Mobile event) I just would love to know: have more people out there had this happen, this way? Going to a Wheel Mobile event, not having your name drawn, but actually end up making it to the second audition? Marty said they would get back to the chosen one's in about 4 months about the final audition. What has been the time frame for you, if this happend to you this way? Also: my boyfriend, Don, made a video which got sent in to the WHEEL folks on Easter Sunday which was April 18th. Has anyone had that experience of getting on the show this way? I write because I still want to believe there is hope, even though I'm disappointed, ha ha. I'd like to believe that my sister and Don still have a chance..... We had Marty of course, and our Vanna was Tracey Wilson, she was awesome too. They have so much energy! Some of the puzzles that came by were: High Hopes, Chinese Noodles, Space The Final Frontier, Hopes & Dreams (someone incorrectly guessed "Pants & Dresses"), Coral Reef, and Winning Isn't Everything, with the attempted solve for that one being "Winning AIN'T Everything". Have mercy huh? Okay, that is basically my experience and my big old book here! Thank you for reading, I really would love some input from my fellow WHEEL friends here Have any of you gone to many Wheel Mobiles and never been drawn? Ahhhhhhhh, so many burning questions eh? I do appreciate any and every answer, truly. Thanks a ton! Dana

Sorry it seemed like a bit of a dud for you all, Dana. Definitely not. Each event usually has some duds, but many have interesting stories and talents to share. There usually are some puzzles that take too long to solve, repeated letters, and ridiculous answers, but it never becomes too much of a nuisance depending on the type of crowd and its size. Prizes and I both got picked for auditions this way. The time frame varies, but the notice for the audition usually comes about a month earlier than what Marty says, from what I've read. My first Wheelmobile event was in May, Marty said three months, and the audition was in July. Ugh, skipping the Northeast before heading back to home base, I see. -_- They better hit the road again real soon.

Side bar: Is this the case at most Wheel Mobile events? I've only been to the Minnesota one's and the people stay the same, if you know what I mean. At my Wheelmobile event, I distinctly remember someone from my group who said to Marty, "I don't like getting up and talking in front of people." My next thought was, "What the hell are you doing here, then?" (Needless to say, I don't think she advanced.) My general advice to people going to these sorts of things is, "Be yourself, only bigger," with a caveat--don't overdo it, because it's so easy to tell when you're overdoing it. Judging from what you said, these people did exactly what I'd tell people NOT to do. It's free money, yes, but you have to convince the people who decide who gets that free money that you're likeable enough to merit that money. You have to make America want you to get that free money.

I was at one in Detroit a few weeks ago, and it seemed pretty bad too. They had a 6,000 seat amphitheater about half full for the entire show (I say about half full, because the entire back half was vacant), and even the sixth show felt about as full as the first. Almost nobody that got on seemed to have it. To wit: * One of the first ladies called down was obviously very fake with her enthusiasm. * There were a LOT that had no idea what they wanted to say to Marty. * Nearly every other puzzle had someone make a bad letter call with most of the puzzle filled in. * One lady called FOUR repeated letters... and still solved the puzzle when it came back around to her the fifth time. * One person called a J on their first turn. * One guy was dressed like Michael Jackson and seemed to be trying way too hard to sell it. * One person started twerking, and Marty yelled "this is a family show!" * Lots of "Oh, I'm so nervous, I hate getting up in front of people!" types * No one that I recall having any particular standout talents, just a couple dancers and singers, and one guitar player * One guy tried to send down his daughter instead * Almost nobody seemed to react when their name was called About half of the calldowns were done by staff of the local network, and most of the time, I couldn't even hear said staff, even when I was sitting in the second row. On the other hand, Chad Mosher (who has been on Jeopardy!, Millionaire, and Million Dollar Password) got called up. I thought he had potential, but mom thought he seemed too slick. I didn't get called up in Detroit, but I'm just taking that to mean that my second-level audition from St. Louis is still "fresh". Mom saw someone like that when we were in Terre Haute last year, too. I also remember a confused looking old guy who, when Marty asked "are you ready to play Wheel?", said "No?" in a puzzled voice.

Yes, the Wheel Mobile is heading back to CA next....and wow---both you and "Prizes" got picked for auditions with an email? So basically there is some hope? Like I say, I really would love them to have at least a chance. And yes: lots of duds, only a few "with it" people who stood out and were personable and able to play the game intelligently. UGH. Hopefully the Wheel Mobile makes it's way back to the Mid West soon, guess we'll see......thanks again!! Dana

Wow WooWho, I think I do remember a post where you said that about the person saying "I don't like getting up and talking in front of people". You just have to shake your head at that one. Why are they there?? That spot could SO have went to someone who deserved it, THAT'S the stuff I'm taking issue with here! Yes and I hear you when you say "Be yourself, only bigger". And double yes! These people were just either ridiculously "duddy", meaning so boring, saying the same things over and over; OR very over-the-top where it was just silly. I was always looking for that normal, interesting, happy medium, but that didn't happen too often. Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate every response here!! Dana

Oh tenpoundhammer, I SO hear you, on everything you said!!!!! Sounds like a rerun of my experience. And see, again, not to sound mean, but holy Hannah! THESE are the people who are getting called down to the stage, while the nice, normal people who have prepared and really want to be there remain shut out. That's the part I'm really taking issue with, but I guess you just can't help whose name is drawn. I kind of wish there were a better system set up to "weed" some people out. But anyway---I really hear you on what you said, definitely. Oh yeah, alot of times, no one would react when their name was called, as you said. I was just sitting there shaking my head by the end of it all. TenPound, can you elaborate? You said you went to the WheelMobile in Detroit, but didn't get called....was the St. Louis audition just a little bit ago or something? Do you have a post that tells about your Wheel experiences? I would love to read it, I'm trying to get my hands on everything connected to how people are getting their auditions....I'd love to see my sister/boyfriend end up with those beautiful emails saying they've gotten a second audition sometime in the future ;---) Thanks again! First off, good luck to your sister and boyfriend! Don't give up hope and just keep auditioning! Auditioning is just part of the 'Fortune' part in 'Wheel of Fortune!' There always will be a few duds out there, specifically, people who tried out because they're friends with actual WOF fans (my mom being one [all heck would have broken loose if she got on and I didn't ]) and of course those people who just read the flyer, and say 'Hey that sounds fun. Let's just give it a shot.' So between those people, I'd say these 'duds' are majority of the room. As for the interview portion, I felt that the people from my audition were pretty memorable (Jackson, CA). Most of the ones I've seen on stage seemed prepared along, with Marty's show-and-tell of about 3 dancers, 3 karaoke singers (including me), and a few other stand-out moments. A few that I remember were a woman saying that she was an adult novelist (that went down a fun route), someone who could say 'I need to use the bathroom' in about 10 different languages and there was this one nervous person on stage who did say that he didn't like public speaking, but he turned it around and made it more comedic. If anything, I'm just glad that I made one of the most stand-out interviews to the point where Marty is able to remember and pinpoint my audition up until now! Otherwise Dana, you and your crew are more than prepared for future auditions to come if anything. Just have them keep trying out. You'll be a great coach for them! P.S.S. Woohoo Fresno! That's within driving distance for me hah, I wonder if they need any guest appearances

Hi everyone. Long-time lurker. First time poster. I also went to the Wheelmobile in Hinckley and have pretty much the same impressions as Dana. Here are some of my thoughts.
Marty and Tracey were both very high energy and very fun. They made it exciting and enjoyable even for those of us who didn't get picked. Marty was also good at knowing when to move on from people who were having difficulty during the interview.
The crowd who got picked was interesting to say the least. Not trying to be mean, but as my wife joked, you should expect a certain crowd when you have it at a casino (give the fanny pack to someone else if you get called up on stage).
I was surprised by how little people were reacting to being picked, especially since Marty said the audition started when you got up from being picked. There were very few people who seemed excited or made noise when they were picked. There was usually more of a reaction from the people around the one who got picked!
I thought the women who was speaking Italian had a good gimmick to start but she was too over the top and carried it on so long it just became annoying (probably not a good reason for being memorable).
Most of the people were more memorable for negative reasons than good ones (I remember one women saying she didn't have anything exciting to say about herself). I can understand the first set of people getting tongue tied because they didn't know what questions would be asked, but after the first few rounds, I would think people would have been planning what they would say if they were called up.
It has been mentioned here before, but if you mention something about dancing, be prepared to show off some moves. Everyone who mentioned it had to dance. I don't remember seeing any singers, but would assume the same holds true.
It seemed like Tracey was picking applications that were crumpled/creases. I read on here somewhere she seemed to pick flat ones. Maybe it's a recent change, but it didn't seem to be the case with this time.
One other thing that was kind of surprising was how many couples or people from the same group that got picked. There were quite a few times when someone would tell Marty that he had talked to his/her spouse in one of the other games. There seemed to be a bunch of people who got picked that were there to support someone else.
Lastly, there was someone who solved the puzzle with very few letters showing and Marty said "New Baby Buggy"!

Lastly, there was someone who solved the puzzle with very few letters showing and Marty said "New Baby Buggy"! Hi Obiwan! YES YES! I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said, for sure. Thank you for your recap too, you've fleshed it out wonderfully. Random thoughts: We all commented on the way home (probably even while it was happening) on HOW MANY COUPLES/people who knew each other did get picked to go up. And there we all sat, no one's names were being called at all from our little group, but there were husbands and wives who had had each other go up in a different round. I wonder how that happens? Just luck of the draw? And yes, I read here too that Tracey was more likely to pick the flat applications....it wasn't the case here, I can ditto what Obiwan said. Ha ha about "New Baby Buggy", I immediately thought of Emil :--) And Marty did reference "Achilles" in one of his jokes too, that was funny. I think we had one lady who mentioned that she liked karaoke, then of course Marty cajoled her into it----she didn't want to, but eventually "Mary Had A Little Lamb' came out. Ok, I will agree about the Italian speaking lady schtick to start, but yes---it DID go on too long and got tiresome after awhile. Obiwan: did you attend all three sessions that day? We all day, but to no avail. I keep hoping one or the other will end up with an email invite. Cross your fingers for us! Were you actively trying to get up there too, or was it more your wife? Did you see the guy who wanted to give his turn up to some girl in the audience? Grrrrrr on him. And yep, I could have died at the lack of enthusiasm from alot of the people, I was so hoping to hear someone's name from our group: I would have screamed like a banshee for them!!! That's what I did when my name was drawn back at another event in 2005; the whole ballroom turned and looked my way, ha. In closing, I have to say that I love Marty and Tracey, they kept things bearable....so much good energy there, I just want to be around them all the time; wonder if the Wheel crew has any openings? Ha ha. Thank you for chiming in Obiwan, will you keep in touch if you get any sort of email/letter?

As Vanna said on last night's show: "Never give up, on WHEEL or in life". I thought that was nice. Anyway, I hear you on everything you said, thanks for chiming in!! YES, I would say the duds make up a big portion of the room. Which bodes well for others I guess, and hopefully us if one of our group happens to get that second invite email ;--) And yes, I am ready to coach the life out of them if that happens, ha ha ha. From the sounds of it, you've witnessed some good interviews, as opposed to my experiences. You should go to Fresno----I'm sure Marty would welcome you on stage with open arms Take care Emil, thanks for your good, positive thoughts!!! Dana

Dana I'm the resident Wheelmobile chaser. My first one was down in Jacksonville in November 2009. I got onstage there and solved BOX OFFICE HIT, then got invited back to the second-round audition in March 2010. There, I made it all the way past the written test to the very end. And waited. And waited. And they never called me for the show. So finally, in October 2012, we found that the Wheelmobile would be in Cincinnati, only 6 hours from me. Went down there, didn't get picked. I flew to St. Petersburg in December 2012; didn't get picked. Flew to Cabazon, CA in February 2013; didn't get picked. Syracuse in May 2013; didn't get picked, but I met MarioGS there. Terre Haute in June 2013; didn't get picked, but my mom did. St. Louis later in June 2013; met whammy007 there, and I got picked. I made sure to make some noise when Marty called me, got onstage, had a good interview planned out, all that other stuff, and solved SWEDEN AND DENMARK. Then a couple months later, I get an invite back to St. Louis for the second round audition. Mom drives me to Flint, and I take Amtrak the rest of the way. My motel happens to be next door to the casino where the auditions are held, so I scope the place out early even though my invite said I didn't have to be there until 2 PM. I find the place, and the guy says "Well, if you have your letter, we can take you in right now." Cue me fumbling with my phone, trying to figure out how to load Yahoo! mail, and eventually showing him the letter. Once again, I make it all the way to the end, past the written test to the final leg. And I'm still waiting. Even though I figure they'll still call me for my St. Louis audition, since those things can take over a year, I decided I'd go to the Wheelmobile in Detroit since it was only 3 hours away. My mom and I entered our names all six times, and I think my sister put her name in for the sixth go-round, but none of us got called. I figure that's just a sign that I will get picked from my St. Louis audition!

With these Wheelmobile reports, I'm starting to wonder if I should go through with my business plan I wrote as a senior year project and write a book about my experience/ how I get on; then do a tour across the country giving seminars on how to audition.

Honestly, your story matches in mine terms of oddballs, and general, geez, stupid raffle spinner luck! Check that out if you haven't, I think I posted it January 8th. I put it in the 'So You're Going to a Wheelmobile Event?' thread, basically copying every single puzzle, in my phone. I went to all 6, Mario only went all of the 2nd day, met fellow admin MarioGS (oh, the fun we had!), neither of us picked, throughout all the time. I covered every player, every puzzle, on my trusty iPhone, both for record purposes, and the hilarity and WTFery that comes out of these things. I think I'd view it as a bizarre perk, in Marty's position (or one of the traveling Vannas, like Tracey). This was October 2013, 8th and 9th, I believe and my audition email came 12/31/13. I mean, what a treat for the new year, right? I get into the audition through surprise email, just as I got back from a trip to Atlantic City (well huh, more signs, gambling, plus the Vegas parallel!) and I yelled loud enough to shatter glass, leaving everyone else wondering what the hell was going on with me, as I mentioned at an (unaired) interview with my Wheel affiliate, WPRI. I also showed them how I screamed, which, yeah, true experience, right? Audition was January 9th, so I had to find some clothes, prep for the day of my life, so I found a good excuse to go to Target, buy me a wardrobe. I get in, sit next to a fellow member (convinced her to join!) who was on her 4th audition. Unlike the others who told Jackie just "hi!", I gave her, out of kindness, if potentially showing I knew a bit much, I gave a unique, hopefully to stand out, "Hi Jackie!" Won't do that again. I also made a point of doing this, to shake her hand, among others, post-audition, to leave a lasting, hopefully positive, impression, with maybe a little bit of class in there. I was surprised how few did so, maybe 5, tops, of my remaining 21, of those surviving the quiz. I sit and watch, take note of the puzzles, get excited for those $5,000 hits, probably more than the actual players at that time--though I never got one, FP, Bankrupt or LAT (well, I got Bankrupt right away on my first spin, but it was moved immediately to $900), which, for as much as I played, I found weird. I get called up fairly early on, at a fortunate time, where I just know the puzzle. Call 'em out of consonants, belt the letters and solve; fittingly an Food & Drink puzzle, which is not only my favorite category, but I'm a foodie, so I'm feeling crazy confident at that point. I get my 'Spin This!' shirt, and begin flailing my hands in the air to do a dance, as if I was swimming with water on top of me. I was genuinely THAT excited, you couldn't contain me. I was also on no sleep, had by far the most energy, because Wheel, well, Wheel is life, as Mario's sig indicates. I get through that, basically know I'm a lock, do the quiz. I was a touch worried, but I knew I got like 10-12 right, on a rough day. Heck, I remember half the puzzles I did, so I'll be in good shape next time. Some folks said they didn't get ANY right. Ouch. I was like one of the last 3 called, which forget the 'woo!' they tell you to, I did a 'WhoaoooooooooaaaaoOOOOOOO!' Genuine thrill, just my natural, if a bit primal, reaction; got everyone to look at me. Namely, because I knew my puzzle solving skills were a bit off at that point, and the quiz was my biggest fear, and at that moment, I feel nothing was going to stop me from spinning that 2400 pound wheel, interacting with Pat, maybe even solving the bonus round, playing the game I've done since age 2, my first, my beloved, even once making a puzzleboard out of old milk cartons to turn. I only played (and solved) a 2nd puzzle, as opposed to everyone else's minimum of 3. My second legit stumped me, at first, which was a scary thought. Thankfully, I thought to just use the too-common CDMA letter package, of those that hadn't been used, since they're so common in most words, bought vowels, made sure I was loud. I got so caught up in the moment that I forgot to smile when I solved, but as soon as Jackie said so, I was on it, and she noted right away I did. I play intense, so focused, and could follow directions, all of which I think were good signs, for the future. All good there. Ditto my interview, which got a few laughs, regarding me being a foodie ('It's faaaaaaabuuulous!') made me seem like the family type I am, my various travels, and my goal with the money (hit up all continents before 30, which mom thought was a bit showy--I thought it was something to have them remember me by, especially since it's trips). Apparently, I nailed that part of it, Jackie kept tapping, circling my paper, and others said I was a lock to get on post audition, including a team who was on Girlfriend Getaways earlier this season. And the weeks came, past, about 15 day, my friend Richard at a later audition made it, I did not. No letter. My undoing was likely, of all things, in my name, if they do a background check. My legal name at the time did not match the one I put down on my application (why that is, I'll spare you, long story). It was just annoying, and emotionally very depressing since I knew I had done everything right, knew rules, played well, not remotely nervous, etc. I'm still bitter about it, but never once a bit on the part of the Wheel staff; I'm more mad at myself for failure, and doing something wrong, and still can't figure out what, exactly. I had convinced myself if I just got ONE chance, at an audition, especially if I passed the quiz, I could do this. Not to mention, I feel like I let the site down, still do, to be honest, in that I make a bad rep for the site, by proxy, of doing this dang site, but not being able to get on (see the avatar), making me look like that much more of a failure of a leader and admin. Apologies about the derail, though I thought it might be good to have a brief refresher of what the audition actually is, past the Wheelmobile, if your boyfriend and/or sister get that first letter of awesomeness!

Dana, nice to hear from you. I missed the first session but went to the last 2. I was definitely hoping to get on stage. Did you try going to Milacs as well?
I will definitely let you know if I hear anything. You let us know if your boyfriend and/or sister hear too. Good luck to them!

We went to all three of the Hinckley sessions, but did not go to Milacs...now of course I'm wondering if that's where should have gone too. Milacs was where my name was drawn, back in the day in 2005---ahhhh, such good memories YES, please let me know if you hear anything from WHEEL in the future---private message me if you want to! And I will do the same for you, for sure. The best of luck to you and your wife! It's such a fun time, I really wish everyone could experience it.

I am thinking of applying online and have a question for people who have done so? What kind of things are they looking for in a video? The guidelines seem sort of vague and I would like to get a better idea of what people have done. Thanks for the help!

I am thinking of applying online and have a question for people who have done so? What kind of things are they looking for in a video? The guidelines seem sort of vague and I would like to get a better idea of what people have done. Thanks for the help! Hi again. Regarding the video, my boyfriend, Don, did one on Easter Sunday this year, and we sent it in that night. We did quite a few takes of it before finally settling on a good one. I would think the WHEEL people are looking for good positive energy, being clear and well spoken and enthusiastic. I can only speak from what we did---it was about a minute long too, which is what I think they want. My question is, I wonder if they all eventually are looked at by someone? Good luck to you if you do it, let us know how it goes!
