It looks like they're in a circus tent! Clever setup.

This almost looks like a beta version of the Wheelmobile.

And that's the Wheel they used? The one that would later be used in that parade promo? No kidding! If only there were some better shots of the puzzle board as well as how those score podiums worked. Still, I have read about this over at the Wiki, and I'm glad I got to see some photos of this.

Interesting how they used a version of the '75 board when it was retired in '81.

Yes, that's what happens after three and a half years. Luckily, this is the internet and nothing is ever truly lost. You can view the pics using the Wayback Machine here.

Really cool photos, although I don't think the Ohio State Fair played THAT much of a role in the success of the nighttime Wheel.

Especially since the show was already a moderate success in daytime for years, despite claiming that the show was "fairly new". With many households yet to have cable TV in 1983, and especially with no Internet and computers more like toys, you had a good chance of finding Wheel on your dial. These "trial" episodes may have only aired locally, and in part at that this new version was just starting out, a most cost effective set was used as the first "official" road shows would not come until New York in Season 6. Wheel DID come to kickoff Season 15 though at the Ohio State Fair. An effective ad in Broadcasting magazine complete with "Introducing a Wheel with Legs" including statements including "NBC's #1 game show since 1976" and increasing its lead-in ratings since its debut, including a photo with the Sandy/Sue/Fred episode from an early Pat/Vanna episode with Pat handing a Free Spin token over to Sandy, and word of mouth following those first stations signing up, with this event perhaps playing a part helped to bolster its success.
