I just found out about it as I'm typing this, and I'm still in shock.
As well as watching old clips where he announced for game shows, I'm probably going to think of him every time I play Wheel for Wii, not to mention the Playstation versions that he was in.
As for a replacement, I believe Rich Fields would be the best. I know Johnny Gilbert had announced for Wheel a few times, and it just wasn't the same. The way Fields announced for cars and cash prizes on PIR leads me to believe he'd be the best replacement at this point.

This is sad news because Charlie O. is the announcer I personally associate with the show. Charlie was the best because he added excitement to that copy he was reading from. He's very much missed.
It's a shame since 1996 (give or take) he hasn't said his famous "WHEEEEEEEEEEL OF FORTUNE!!" announcement. Well, the good news is I don't desire to hear that in the intro anymore since NO ONE can announce that like Charlie.
Personally, I though Rich Fields (since Mike Richards was stupid enough to oust him from Price Is Right) was the best announcer to succede Charlie, but Jim Thornton is ok too. Jim is more like a Jack Clark type announcer which is what Pat really likes.
