Take into account the overall production quality, the way the set looked, gameplay elements, Pat's hosting style, and the way the contestants played.
I end with 2008 because Season 25 was the last great season, IMO. Here are more details about the years I have posted:
1983-1984 - Not much different than the daytime show. Chatty contestants, N as in Nancy, bicycling airing method.
1984-1987 - Nighttime gains its footing. Higher Wheel amounts, new graphics, new Wheel colors in 1986. The show breaks ratings records.
1987-1989 - Play for cash. I'm a Wheel Watcher, pick your Bonus prize, huge bonus prizes, excellent gameplay from contestants, five to seven rounds are normal.
1989-1995 - The CBS years. Many changes: new sound effects, Free Spin token, Bonus Round envelopes, Surprise, $10,000 wedge. Lots of road shows.
1995-1996 - The first Harry years. Move to Sony, Double Play, some set changes. America's Game.
1996-2000 - Harry begins to make his mark. One Wheel template, Jackpot, Electronic Puzzle board, theme weeks. Even more road shows.
2000-2003 - Many changes. Toss-ups, Mystery Round, New Bonus Round, Prize Puzzle.
2003-2008 - Neon Set. High definition, new Wheel colors, the show begins to embrace its history in retrospect, but not really in production value.
As for me, I have a soft spot for the 1989-1995 period for several reasons, but hands down, the show was never better than 1987-1989.
