...that's what the show site's official timeline says. I wonder who they think the original announcer was.
And today is the tenth anniversary of my tape date.

Happy taping anniversary! That info is completely wrong. Charlie had been with WOF from the beginning, even the 1974 Edd Byrnes pilots.

Happy taping anniversary! That info is completely wrong. Charlie had been with WOF from the beginning, even the 1974 Edd Byrnes pilots. Thanks! And it's kinda scary to realize that fans know more about the history of the show than the staff does, though I've had the same experience with TPIR. At least they're acknowledging that the daytime show existed and the show didn't come into existence in 1983.

Indeed. Now he wasn't the announcer on Shopper's Bazaar, but he was the announcer on both Byrnes pilots, and the 2005 episode of E! THS which discusses Wheel has a clip of the opening of the first episode from January 6, 1975. I don't see the voice shouting the show's name as anyone besides the late, great Charlie O'Donnell (which I was very lucky to talk to when the show came to Navy Pier in 2002). That confirms that he was present on the show in 1975. The opening clip of the first hour-long show confirms he stayed with Wheel throughout 1975.
And yeah, I find it pathetic that CBS and Sony know far less than Wheel fans do, far less than what they actually need to know.
BTW, to end it off on a good note, John, Happy 10th!

John, have you considered posting your episode on YouTube? I'm sure a lot of us would want to see it.

Thanks! And it's kinda scary to realize that fans know more about the history of the show than the staff does, ...Yeah, it really is, especially since John Lauderdale's been there since the very start. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, mind you -- it's more amusing than anything for me. Speaking of scary, though...back in 2009, Jeopardy! managed to miss Jeff Kirby making a return appearance on the show (if you've appeared on the Trebek era, you can't appear on it again) until after it aired, when the old Sony forums went "Hey, that guy was on the show in '99...and he lost pretty badly last time, too. He's even wearing the same damn tie!" The show promptly thanked said forum and voided his $1,000. though I've had the same experience with TPIR. In fairness, at least they've managed to get their episode count out of "totally whacked" territory since #7,500. At least they're acknowledging that the daytime show existed and the show didn't come into existence in 1983. True, although it feels a bit weird that they wouldn't acknowledge Shopper's Bazaar or the '74 pilots. (Then again, given that said pilots bring a "yeah, really, these became the show that's been running for the last 40 years" feel and that it took Lin Bolen putting her job on the line to even get Wheel on the air, I'm not too surprised. )
