Asking for a good friend of the site (hey Cribs!); anyone here know where and when this chant came from? As I understand it, it's been in use, the same one, since 1983, at least, with the syndicated era, possibly earlier. However, where is beyond me-maybe still in the studio, first syndicated taping? Just guesses based on what I know of the show's past.

Most likely the first nighttime taping, yeah. It could've debuted on daytime first, but I'm not aware of any episodes being around from between mid-May (still before the chant) and Halloween '83, so it's kinda up in the air.

I'm a longtime fan and would like to know this as well! I'm guessing they at one point they just had the audience shot the words.

I've also been wondering where it came from myself. It didn't even sound like it came from a studio audience. It sounded more ochestrated and recorded. When the show goes on the road where the live audience gets to shout, it doesn't sound as straightforward if you know what I mean.

I thought the chants came from the audience. Or does it come from a recording since 3 decades?

The audience would have to be super consistent to have the chant sound the exact same for 3 decades.

Considering how excited the studio audience is during the show these days (road shows notwithstanding)... how could that not be a recording?
If they had the audience do it live now, it'd probably come out sounding something like "wheel... of... forzzzzzzzzzzzzz".

I thought the chants came from the audience. Or does it come from a recording since 3 decades? Barring a few road shows back in the day, the chant is ALWAYS the same recording (although sometimes on modern episodes you can hear some actual audience members doing the chant along with the recording). The same chant recording is also used in Wheel video games, arcade games, and slot machines.

Angie, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but please try not to bump threads that have been inactive for as long as this one has without something substantial to add to the discussion.

Probably the chant was recorded by an audience at Ohio State Fair when the syndicated version debuted on WEWS in Ohio on August 29th, 1983. or it might be recorded on August 8th at NBC Studios when "Big Wheels" by Alan Thicke is replaced with "Changing Keys" by Mort Lindsey.
