Not missing much? I'd at least say the scores on the first Byrnes pilot made it exciting.

Well, that and him pretty much bullying a contestant into spinning again when she tried to solve an 11-letter puzzle with just three showing. Insisting someone should "be a gambler!" felt...really, really uncomfortable. Awww. I wanted to see how Edd did on both, since it's been said he was terrible. Honestly, all things considered I give him a pass. No, it wasn't professional for Edd to be drunk, but per his autobiography Kookie No More he was "scared to death" about doing Wheel (even though he was suggested for the show by NBC execs). This was also during a long period where he was dealing with alcoholism, and as such I'm of the belief he only meant to drink a little to calm his nerves but simply went overboard. ...And boy, does it show. Even then, Edd seems to have sobered up a bit during whatever taping break there was between his two shows (both taped August 28, 1974), as he seems to be a bit more in control during what's around of his second pilot. |
