After having interacted with @bavboards on Twitter for some time now, I figured that I should finally join the boards and say hi! I was a contestant on May 7, 1998 during Houston Week. I failed to solve a single puzzle, mostly due to bad luck on the wheel, not solving when I knew the puzzle and not being able to see the used letter board, and finished with $0. But I still had a fantastic time and left with my head held high. I posted clips and commentary of my experience on Twitter with #WOFmemory. Here is one of those clips: Round 2. One thing I can't help but wonder today is how I would've fared had I played the game in the modern era with elements that favor those who are better puzzle solvers, such as Toss-ups, Prize Puzzles and Express. Unless Wheel changes their rules about playing a second time, I suppose I'll never know and have to settle for playing Wheel of Fortune Twitter Toss-up and getting beaten regularly by former Wheel contestants like emilburp. Oh, and one last thing: may January 6 be declared #NationalWheelofFortuneDay ASAP!

Hey there, Eugene! Glad to see you join the boards at last, and looking forward to hearing from you more in the future! Thanks! Feels weird having more than 140 characters to work with! And thanks for updating my Airdate and Winnings on my profile. Wasn't sure how that was going to happen. My parting gifts WERE quite lovely...until they became lost, broken or unusable. The modern $1K rule makes so much more sense, both for the players (freedom to buy what they want or use it to cover travel expenses) and for Wheel (less admin overhead).

Welcome to the boards, Eugene! Sorry to hear that you didn't do so well on your episode. But I'm glad that you still had fun. In my opinion, I think that's what is most important. You seemed to be quite a character, too! If you're interested, you should definitely give our Daily Puzzle Game a try. Also, once we relaunch our "Game On!" section, you should check out some of our mock Wheel of Fortune games there. Oh, by the way, I'm from the Houston area too!

Thanks gamedude2330! Good to meet a fellow Houstonian. Hope you got to see James from Cypress win his game near the end of last season. Wonder if he's found the boards yet. Funny you mentioned the games on offer here as I just noticed them myself. Certainly will give them a try! Hope they're not as addictive as Twitter Toss-up!

And there's BAV contestant #100.
Welcone aboard, Eugene! I remember watching you on TPIR recently (was it last year?) and thinking, "This guy's fun to watch." Remind us what you won there again?

Thanks WooWho! Yes, I was on TPIR last year on an episode that aired October 22, 2014. Won a $1100 Gateway computer in Contestant's Row, but lost my pricing game, Squeeze Play, with a chance to win a Yamaha waverunner. Also lost the Showcase Showdown, but was honored to have spun the OTHER famous big wheel and give shoutouts to my family: youtu.be/4ji2Zy10bZIIn the 80's growing up I loved watching both TPIR and Wheel. Still do. But I remember a time back then when our NBC affiliate decided to move the time of daytime Wheel to the same time as the second half of TPIR. Since this was right before the videotape age, what was I to do? We had two TV's, so whereas my brother chose to watch Wheel, I made the tough decision to stick with TPIR. Always felt a little guilty about that. Maybe I should ask Wheel for forgiveness on Twitter. #lol

Welcome to the boards, Eugene! You sure showed a lot of enthusiasm on the show, even though you ended up with nothing. At least you had a great time on the show. Did you leave with some "lovely parting gifts"?
Lemme tell you something. Back in September of 2003, I went to see a taping of The Price is Right TWICE, in attempt to being called on down to contestants' row. Sadly, no luck. At least I got to meet Bob Barker, and get his autograph on the back of my T-shirt. In fact, I still have it at home someplace, along with my nametag. At least it was a fun experience seeing the show in person.

Thanks wheelgenius! Yes, I did receive some lovely parting gifts just for playing. The most expensive was a 9-piece camping package which I let friends borrow and never got to use myself because I'm not much of a camper. The most disappointing one was an Armitron watch as it died after only a short period of use. Even though I did get to come on down on Price, I am SO JEALOUS you got to meet Bob! So wished I could've attended a taping with him as host before he retired. Wanted to the year he retired, but my wife and I just had our first child then and I didn't think it was right to leave her with our newborn so I could bid adieu to Bob, even though he was (and still is) my favorite game show host ever.

Still, you were lucky to be on two great game shows, and spin two famous wheels. Wheel of Fortune in 1998, and The Price is Right in 2014. Wow. 16 years apart. Being on national TV was the very fun part for you, I'm sure. You had one heck of an experience on TPIR, although you lost on Squeeze Play, and the Showcase Showdown. At least you won something in contestants' row. That's better than nothing.

Welcome Eugene! A shame you had bad luck with the wheel on Wheel of Fortune, but you were still very exciting!

wheelgenius and genius2751 thx for your kind words! I occasionally wonder how I would've faired if I played the modern version of the game with elements that favor good puzzle solvers, such as Tossups, Prize Puzzle, Express. I aced the written test at my audition and I believe I knew the solutions to all the puzzles in my game before the other players did except for the last one where it was a tie between me and the winner. I'm not the best puzzle solver by any means, but good enough such that I probably would've solved at least one puzzle had I played the game today. Unless of course I played against two members of the Epic Solvers Club and hit LAT or Bankrupt on every spin! I dream about being given a second chance during a special Redemption Week of shows, even if only for charity, but at the same time I realize that so many people want to play the game and thus it's selfish of me to want another crack at it. And this is why I enjoy every chance I get to help others in their quests to get on the show and play the game well in whatever way I can.

Hey, I forgot about that thread but welcome to the forums eybyon. I know you didn't get any luck with the wheel, but I'm pretty sure everyone had an exciting moment at Houston.

Hahaha "...but then there was Eugene..." Very interesting, thanks for sharing! Cool how technology has changed the auditions. How was the wheelmobile back then? It doesn't look like a stage show/2-step process? Congrats on having such an exciting experience from start to finish!
I wish I would have saved the news report from WAND Springfield. I wasn't featured like you, but they were doing a news report on the final auditions and coincidentally I was in the B-Roll calling a letter as the reporter voiced over, "...and some of these people will actually be contestants on the show" or something to that effect.

I was in shock when the story aired. Had no idea they were going to do that! Was a HUGE confidence booster in getting selected as a contestant. How could they turn me down after our local Wheel affiliate said I should get picked?
Yeah, the Wheelmobile was very different back then. For the Houston auditions, you had to be one of the first 200 in line at designated locations around the city to have a chance to be selected for an audition. There was no stage show whatsoever. Each of the first 200 got to spin the prize wheel and submit an index card application. From the thousands of applicants, they picked several hundred for auditions at a hotel ballroom like the ones they do today. We were told they picked at random, but I suspect some who were noticed by Wheelmobile staff may have gotten specially selected.
