This summer, I was back home in Nebraska after completing my first year of college in New England. In the beginning of June, I received an email inviting me to a final audition because of my fan video submission. Problem is, the audition was back near my college in NYC. Even though the email read that I shouldn't incur any costs to travel to the final audition site, I booked my flight with frequent flier miles.
The day of the audition arrived and my flight made it to LaGuardia without any problems. There were around forty of us in the ballroom and two auditions that day. During the first part of the audition (where they call people at random to play the game) I was able to solve another and was later "Bankrupted" out after they figured out that I was about to solve a second one. My game-playing style was an attempt to mirror all of the things I had studied online (speak confidently and clearly, guess either the n or the g on "What are You Doing?", buy vowels with the Free Play space, and, of course, smile!) and thought it was going pretty well. I may have solved 6-8 puzzles correctly out of 16, which definitely was not great when compared with the guy in the row in front of me who seemed to have gotten them all correct.
After they were done scoring the tests, the three WOF reps returned to name the people they wanted to take a closer look at. Oddly enough, I was not in that final group out of the 20 called, and neither was the guy who had solved all of the puzzles on his test. I figured that it was the end of the road for me, yet two weeks later I received a letter from the WOF studios confirming my spot in the contestant pool on the show. Has anyone had a similar experience to this and any idea of how that worked out?

So glad you joined here. I remember showing you the site and you saying how much it helped you prepare. Congratulations on making the show!

CONGRATS! Totally know how you feel right now. Similar experience. Sort of. I suppose you can look through my old posts for the details. When I first did a final audition in Chicago in 2010 (see: a history of trying for wheel through email ), the process was different. If you were dismissed after the puzzle test, you were told, "sorry this is the end of the road for you" or something to that effect. But this time in Springfield, IL in June, they said that you may or may not receive a letter, these are just the people we have to see again. I initially thought that was just to let people down easy so when I was dismissed, I was super disappointed as I was in 2010. But I still held out hope because of what they said. Well, I got the letter exactly 2 weeks later and of course flipped. It's worth mentioning I think I made a good showing at the wheelmobile events. So what I'm thinking (and I've talked to some other future contestants that are thinking the same) is that if you submit a video or attend a wheelmobile audition, they have some sort of notes on you/already determined you could pass the personality test or whatever. That, or just from the little bit of play and puzzle test they could make a decision on you, but I think that's less likely. Would be interested in hearing if anyone got a final audition through random draw and got the letter after not staying post-puzzle test. Congrats again and good luck!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! Kevin, it's good to hear that this is actually a permanent change (or was just randomly used at two WOF auditions in June). Either way, I think we can both agree that it made for a crazy great surprise. Good luck to you, as well!
