Here is an episode from the time that the Free Spin had become just a token but with Pat still spinning the wheel at the start of the game. Too bad Entura took down my main channel on YouTube, but thank goodness for Dailymotion. Speaking of which, while hunting a lot of Beta tapes yesterday, I found a Season 2 J! episode not currently in circulation or on the J! archive that I'll be posting there fairly soon.
Me too! I sometimes even miss the Free Spin wedge too, particularly when it allowed consistent spinners to rack up a whole bunch in a single round. Wonder if something similar has ever happened with the modern Free Play wedge where a contestant dominated a round and eventually solved under the protection of the wedge by hitting it over and over again.

There was a contestant who called AEIOU (and dudded on U) on five Free Plays, and Pat emphasized "All the vowels are gone" in a jokingly angry tone. But then the contestant hit Lose A Turn before he could solve.

Bizarre strategy. Wonder why the contestant did that. To save $ on vowels? Maybe the puzzle was short and thus made buying vowels too risky?
And ah, my arch-nemesis, Lose A Turn: the Great Equalizer!
