I really enjoyed that conversation! Thanks for sharing!
I really liked hearing what Pat had to say about the upcoming playoff games! Like Pat, I also think it's a bummer that either the Pirates or Cubs will be eliminated from the playoffs shortly. I think they are both terrific teams. The huge Rockies fan in me is torn, because I'd love to see Clint Hurdle (former Rox manager) take the Pirates all the way, but I'd also like to see Jason Hammel & Dexter Fowler go for the win with the Cubs! Should be an exciting game to say the least.
I think it's great that he says he has a lot of respect for the contestants. It certainly is more 'high-stakes' nowadays with the internet, in that everything lives on now via YouTube and other digital platforms. And I always wondered why they never had a baseball week that I could remember, but I guess the taping schedule & the long baseball season conflicting makes sense.

Actually, taping wouldn't conflict since they do tape shows during baseball's offseason and could easily be aired during the final 2-3 months (even around Opening Day). Still, with Jeopardy! having their first traditional celebrity edition in awhile (they did have Power Players in Washington, DC a few years ago), I don't see why a celebrity edition couldn't be played outside of the "it hurts the gameplay" reason, since if some TV shows in the past have had actual episodes that included a visit to Wheel, why not return the favor and have the stars appear on them?
Technology has increased the effect of any game/talk/news show in terms of going viral, and its definitely trended the medium towards a much more serious feel compared with being more laid back in the '90s/early '00s.
Looking forward to the Cubs/Cardinals NLDS despite being an Orioles' fan, definitely the NL equivalent of Yankees/Red Sox.

I can't lie and say I listened to the baseball part, heh. But YEAH ST. LOUIS, YEAH CARDINALS! "...I wonder why anyone wants to be on the show. I mean, if I were someone...I don't know that I'd want to put myself in that position, knowing that if I screw up - there it is! And I'm just gonna be played on all the morning news shows on Monday...They know if they do anything goofy it's gonna be you know, played back for the rest of their lives..." :faint: I'm just gonna sit that there for my fellow future contestants yet to tape atlantagirl, cowheelfan, tuffy, GameShow75, mellissa, nebraskagirltoyale

Very interesting interview! Thanks for sharing flerbert419! I grew up a devoted cub fan and can relate to Pat! Now I'm all Rockies which is difficult these days. Kev yikes! Agree that was a little tough to hear

As a Yankee fan who does some MLB (and NFL) podcasts on CLW83.com, Touch 'em All, if you want to see me talk advanced metrics (same page for NFL, though BS Big Show), this is awesome. It's like my two favorite things at once, game shows and sports. All I need now is a huge platter of pulled pork nachos or endless buffalo wings. Pat knows his stuff though, thrown out a few pitches over the years, sometimes at Orioles and Dodgers games, with the occasional LA Kings (NHL) game for good measure. Curiously, MLB and NHL? Those are the favorite sports of BAV's staff, by far, as they are Pat's.

I'd love to have a conversation with Pat about baseball! I'm excited for the Cubs and for Fowler and Hammel... Who knows, maybe the Cubs will win the World Series and make Back to the Future's prediction come true Tuffy, I agree-- it's tough being a Rockies fan but I love them anyway! Pat would probably say we need better pitching (which we do!) Cheers to hopefully not appearing on the national news due to making a gaffe while playing Wheel!

After that interview, if Wheel ever ends (knock on wood), ESPN should really hire him as a baseball analyst or something. SOMETHING with regards to baseball, he sounded like he would do a fantastic job there

Sorry for the bump, but I just listened to this (and since I'm not a baseball guy, I skipped to the Wheel stuff).
Regarding the celebrity shows, Pat says:
Aside from the fact they haven't had celebs play since 2007 (and the last all-celeb show was way back in 2000), I personally never felt "the play could drag" was an issue, since as far as I knew the whole draw for the audience of "celebs on Wheel of Fortune" was celebs playing Wheel of Fortune. I think the issue is that the main-game format's gotten so stiff and unwavering that they're clearly not willing to relax it for any reason, let alone for celebrity games.
Pat later notes that when they do have celebs on, they're paired up with contestants. Interesting that he says that in the present tense...

I should just note that in some of the leaked Sony Emails, Harry had considered all-celeb shows at a couple of points in the past. Specifically, he and Harpo Productions were in talks for a primetime Wheel special in honor of The Oprah Winfrey Show's 25th anniversary by having Oprah, Dr. Oz, and Nate Berkus play for charity.
Harry was also considering an "undercover celebrity" episode for April Fool's Day 2014 with Kevin O'Leary and Queen Latifah, where they would have posed as regular contestants and they would not have said anything until the next day. Unfortunately, this never happened.

Totally forgot about those, so thanks for that, Mario. in some of the leaked Sony Emails, Harry had considered all-celeb shows at a couple of points in the past. Specifically, he and Harpo Productions were in talks for a primetime Wheel special in honor of The Oprah Winfrey Show's 25th anniversary by having Oprah, Dr. Oz, and Nate Berkus play I can imagine Sony stepping in and going "Yeah, no, we're not paying for a 196th show this season. And they're not, either." Harry was also considering an "undercover celebrity" episode for April Fool's Day 2014 with Kevin O'Leary and Queen Latifah, where they would have posed as regular contestants and they would not have said anything until the next day. The only issue I can think of is how you'd manage to get those three "players" to draw the balls to get that specific episode in that taping day without Standards & Practices tapping you on the shoulder or the legit players that day being outright told what was going on before the drawings (or not, and suspecting that something isn't quite on the up-and-up at some point).

^ They could've always taped their episode first to get it out of the way and then have the real contestants draw balls 2-6. Probably wouldn't have been a big issue since they sometimes tape only five shows a day instead of six.

...Although in that case, you'd potentially have people wondering where the "1" balls went off to. Removing the "6" balls might work a bit better, since as you said some taping days are only five shows.
