I have a question about contestants: when's the last time a senior citizen (or, heck, somebody over about 40) was on the show? It feels like it's been ages. As an aside, one little peeve you brought up is that you mentioned that people should be able to get on game shows, "regardless of physical or psychological" qualities. You do realize that disabled contestants have been on game shows regularly since the 1980s, if not longer? I think the issue is that such contestants seem to be few and far between. As far as I know, Wheel has had a grand total of one deaf contestant (on a 1997 Best Friends Week, so his sign-language interpreter was playing the game as well), and I can't really think of any way to accommodate blind contestants. I think I can add to this discussion (and without posting a spoiler) that the 6th taping on March 3rd (I believe the air date will be either May 3rd or May 31st -- it was both ways in my paperwork) will have a contestant that while not disabled, is a Little Person. His name is Tony, and he is from Upstate New York. He has a great, clear voice and fabulous personality. The show did have to make accommodations for him -- he utilized a designated spinner that only spun the wheel and was not allowed to speak (his old college roommate named Chris) and they had a box for him to stand on to help minimize the height difference between him and Chris while they were both on the podium. By the way, I am 54 and a grandmother, and my episode is set to air on April 20th!

Excellent! I know that there have been other contestants on Wheel who have had a "designated spinner" due to height or other conditions. Good for Tony and Chris! We'll make sure to watch them and you!

While I won't go so far as to say "unfair," my own audition experience this past September did make me wonder about a few things in the selection process. Before I went to the audition I studied the thread about it that is here on the BaV board. I got 10 or 12 (I can't remember which) on the written test, called logical letters (which I think all were part of the puzzles), solved 2 or 3 puzzles, and did the interview/introduction well.
Where I think things went sour for me was the fact that I'm not a natural "smiley" person. I did fine in the interview but while playing the game I had to keep reminding myself to smile and I remember them telling me "happy happy" a few times. I also let them get in my head by changing my game-playing strategy based on whether or not I thought they were going to Lose a Turn or Bankrupt me if I spun the wheel again. I don't know if it has that impact on others but maybe letting those second round games be more natural would give them a chance to see how people really play. I met fellow board poster cowheelfan there (although we didn't know that we both come to this board until after the audition) who, unless he was being extremely nice, felt I did very well overall and was surprised I wasn't selected. All that being said, while I'm bummed I didn't make it, I'll take what I perceive to be my mistakes and try to do better if I ever get another opportunity. Besides, it's their show and they can choose to not select people for any reason they want (or no reason at all).

I wish I could speak more to the second half of the auditions, but I was cut after the written test (I assume because of my Wheelmobile interview. Same if you sent in a video like MarioGS and others. They have a personality "check" and the first half of the audition suffices. Unfortunately though, I think there is also a bit of luck in getting picked. Like in show business (thinking acting and singing here), there are more qualified people than there are spots available. Also, many of us tried multiple times to get on before we made it. (Same goes for Jeopardy!)

IIRC, I have browsed the Jeopardy fan site (jboard) and remember reading about people who have auditioned well over 5 times (I wouldn't be shocked if the record is double digits), and still haven't got on, but are still trying.

I know it took Roger Craig 3 final auditions, for example. J! seems even more mysterious than WoF in their selection process. But also, I bet the number of potential J! contestants is waaaayyyyyy smaller than WoF. AND they tape more episodes each year! Speaking of jboard, how is it SO much more disorganized than this one. When the J! people are supposed to be the "smart" ones?!
