I have never heard of the CCs or Producers deny someone the chance to tape (that wasn't already listed as a standby contestant that day). The only stories I've heard are contestants having to postpone their taping because they were sick or a personal issue coming up. For example, I read of a woman having to call and cancel a couple of days before because she ended up in the hospital with a bad case of the flu. They called her a couple months later with another tape date.
With that said, they have a provision in the contestant release that they do have the right to not use someone as a contestant at their discretion. I highly doubt they would invoke that clause on a whim or just because. When I read it after getting the contestant packet, I assumed it was their safety valve if you show up to the set high/drunk/hungover/extremely sick or are no longer eligible (i.e. you took that job with Sony Pictures Entertainment a month ago) or are such an extreme nuisance to the crew and fellow contestants that they have to boot you.
I would also be interested to hear any stories if anyone knows of a situation.
