What does it say about me that my first thought was, "Oh, what could POSSIBLY go wrong here..."?
I don't doubt the players will do well with it, I'm just worried about the viewing public, if you know what I mean...

Paging lousan92 (or anyone else here who's seen the Spanish series), how did the corresponding round in Spain work? That might give a clue as to how it'll go down here.

I get that after 33 years, they may want to try to change things up... but the format of the puzzles has always been the same, has it not?? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge, this is the first time they tweaking the format of how puzzles appear on the puzzleboard (aside from changing the board itself).
I have watched a few episodes of La Ruleta & noticed this feature as well. I'll be interested to see how this plays out this week...

That looks interesting. Now, I'm envious that everyone else who hasn't played on the show will get their chance to try it.

More info now that we've seen it in action: The first Crossword Puzzle appeared in Round 2, though we don't know yet if its appearance will be randomized between rounds. Gameplay is the same as regular rounds, only the "category" is a common "clue" between each word of the puzzle. It appears that it does not matter which order the words are read in when solving. The first ever Crossword Puzzle: Wheel is actively reading feedback on social media.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I need to see a few more before I decide my opinion.

I just saw it play out. It was ok. Certainly a new way to link words together that are related but with a clue instead of a category. I feel like iroc in that I have to see it more to decide how I feel.
However... They will save a bit of money with multiples (I know there were only two tonight in the crossword part but it's got to add up over time!)

I absolutely love this new category!
It sort of reminds me of a SAME NAME/FILL IN THE BLANK hybrid. I could see it being kind of confusing to the contestants but it's good to see a new category that actually requires thought.
I'm hoping they begin using this category at least once per week in season 34.
Just a thought: this category could be the new SAME NAME or BEFORE & AFTER. When these 2 categories first appeared on the show, they confused many people but just about everyone (who's a regular watcher) now knows how they work.
And, I'm going to have a blast thinking up these kind of puzzles for my at-home games!

The best part is that they want fan feedback on how often the round should be played should this become permanent next season. Based on the wording, it sounds like it will return next season regardless of feedback...unless it's overwhelmingly negative. Seriously, though, while it's not novel it's nonetheless a fresh change of pace. I suppose that if there's a puzzle like the one shown in that screenshot, the players have to solve it (in this instance) down, right, down, right. If you're gonna do it every night, Wheel, retire Before & After while you're at it. It'd be an improvement.

If there is any real concern about the crossword puzzles, it would be attempting to read the solution since it would feel awkward to constantly switch directions reading the words. It can be potential for easy slip ups.
As for the puzzles themselves, I feel it's an okay idea. It might actually even be helpful since it forces players to turn around their thinking in solving puzzles.

The concept itself is very interesting. I would love to see it use often, but I'm not sure how the home audience would feel. (Heck, if I make it on the show I might just have to face one of them).

I LIKE IT. It's like sprinkling crosswords and the Scrabble game show onto our beloved Wheel, adding an extra dimension to the puzzle solving. I'd like it even better if we saw a few more intersections between the words than we did. As for frequency, I feel it's of the same category genre as BEFORE & AFTER and SAME NAME so we should see it with the same frequency (once every 2-3 games) and never as a TU or R4+.
Speaking of which, when was the last time SAME NAME was used in R4+? It was the dreaded category for R4 in my game back in 1998, but I don't see it used these days.

I thought that it would be played like at La Ruleta, but it's the original form of playing this puzzle (what they called "Panel Cruzado"). I don't want to be pessimistic, but in La Ruleta this puzzle was retired eight months after its first appearance. The reason? Contestants usually read "y" ("and") between the two last words, and they decided to replace it with the "Panel Desordenado", a kind of similar puzzle which is a common phrase but its words are scrambled through the puzzle (they can be in horizontal, vertical or even crossing other words). Let's see how it works in Wheel... In my opinion I liked more that they had introduced the "Panel Desordenado". However, the fact of changing categories for an specific clue it's something positive

Since I will hopefully get my call for season 34, I've already started studying. This just throws a curveball.

As long as people don't start adding an AND to the puzzle solution (assuming it's ruled incorrect), I think they'll keep the category. Whatever creativity allows them to get away with puzzles with fewer letters.
