I've often heard the green middle circle on the wheel referred to as the "carpet". Just wondering if it's actual carpet or what it is.

That's the first time I've ever heard of it being called that. I'd always assumed that the Wheel (barring the electronic wedges) was cardboard or something similar.

It definitely doesn't look like carpet. I'm guessing the center is wood, only because I know the layout is placed on top of it, so it wouldn't make that much sense for it to be the same material as the layout itself. It's probably remained the same piece for the past several years aside from a few paint jobs. I'm just guessing, though.

Definitely not carpet. You could sometimes see it on wide shots (I certainly haven't seen it lately), but every now and again they shine a bunch of laser pointers that form the shape of an arrow on the green center, and said arrow points to whomever has control of the wheel to start a round. The way it reflects off the wheel definitely doesn't behave like it would on carpet.
