Hey All!
I have started work on a new 36" wheel, after the wooden base of mine was destroyed by warping caused by storing it outside in intense heat. Most of the wedges were sun damaged and faded, but luckily I was able to save all of the specialty wedges, tags, and the LAT & Bankrupts. Instead of using wood this time because of costs, I found oversized foam board at my local art store--let me tell you this is a godsend! They had 1/2" thick [perfect!] 40 x 60 inch, and 48 x 96 inch boards; I purchased a 40 x 60 inch board and used a compass kit they sold at the store (two little metal "pencils" that attached to a yard stick to draw a circle up to 6' in diameter) to draw out the 36 base. The wedges themselves measure about 10" in length, with the center circle being 14". Below are pictures of the finalized wheel cut out, with the specialty wedges acting as a guide for the next phase of the wheel.
Also, I have attached a picture of the 2016 layout for the 24" wheel I am currently used. While not as posh and polished as TLC's amazing wheel, it still is pretty nifty. I am notorious at home for constantly changing my layouts because I am never satisfied, but I feel like this layout accomplishes a good spread of various wheel wedges and colors, while keeping the $500 minimum amount. I toyed with the idea of bringing back $300-$450 wedges in each $50 increment, but I decided against it. For my wheel, every $50 increment between $500-950 was represented, and aside from the multiple $500s, to avoid the current $500 overload, a few personal favorite values were duplicated.
To avoid resurrecting my other thread that's more than 45 days old, this thread will be the work in progress thread for this new wheel. Wooden dowels, painted and hot glued to the foam board will be used as spikes. Since these will be a little more sensitive, the foam board (3/16" normal variety) may be used to simulate the rubber pointers.
Keep your eyes peeled for progress updates. Credit goes to WheelGenius, and MarioGS for the wedge designs, Germanname for the idea to use foam board instead of wood (if you haven't checked out his wheel yet, do so!), and to TLC for inspiration to step my game up and get better every time I tackle a wheel project.
A life size wheel (or as near as I can get without inconveniencing anybody, including my bank account) is still under debate. With the revelation of this amazing 1/2" oversized board, it may be a reality one day. Thank goodness for a huge huge backyard!
