According to a post over on the Sony boards for Wheel, the show is no longer allowing Canadians to be contestants due to new Canadian privacy laws. As a result, the show is no longer accepting online applications from Canadian residents.

That's terrible. I feel so sorry for you, Mark. I would be so angry. Is the same happening with other game shows?

That's terrible. I feel so sorry for you, Mark. I would be so angry. Is the same happening with other game shows? If Jeopardy! is affected by this law, Alex Trebek is going to be very angry. Feel bad for you Mark. That new law sounds very unfair.

Blasphemous. Absurd. No offense to Canada, because I'd like to move back there, but I'm glad I got out there when I did, if only for eligibility's sake.
FWIW, I think the laws in question aren't new, they're 11 years old. I assume you've heard of the PIPDEA, right, Mark (or Andrew, or any other Canadian here)? If you don't, and for those that don't live in Canada: It's a law that was passed in 2000 that basically makes sure electronic companies, such as Sony, explaining why they are collecting your personal info, as well as the fact that the companies have to get consent from you if you are having your info disclosed. There are exceptions, naturally, like in an emergency or law enforcement.
Of course the law in question could be PIPA, but I'm thinking no, since PIPDEA was clearly violated and seems much, much more relevant.
However, this is not the only issue at hand, as my point below is pretty much on the Sony boards. Wheel airs on CBC (public TV) up North, with various subdivisions, such as CFTO (Toronto), CFCF (Montreal), etc. These are mostly funded by taxpayer money, and why Wheel has had Canada weeks in the past. Unfortunately, the US charges big rates for WOF, and lots of people aren't interested in seeing their dollar go to a game show that they won't watch. There's a simple idea that costs a good deal less; just get Wheel from US stations.
Why even mention this? Because, there's a possibility, with PIPDEA being brought to the forefront, that CBC loses lots of its Canadian membership, which, in turn, would pull Wheel from ALL Canadian markets.
Also, while I do feel bad for you, Mark, as this absolutely sucks, all is not lost; according to Wheel's boards. The casting director is saying that you would first have to attend a US Wheelmobile event, and go from there... I don't know how much to believe that, but I'm just typing what I read here.

What?! You serious? Wow! Canadians no longer allowed on the show? Now I wish they could revive "La Roue Chanceuse" as well as have an English-speaking version there too. You live in Canada, WheelFan17?

Here is a post from the show's Facebook page:
Viewers from Canada can also audition for the show. We are in the process of working out our online privacy policies with Canada so that Canadians can register on wheeloffortune.com for a chance to audition. For tax and legal reasons, viewers outside of the U.S. and Canada are not able to audition for and be contestants on Wheel.
Looks like not all hope is lost, Mark. Do you live near the border? Maybe there will be a Wheelmobile event not too far away.

The law depends on which country you live in.
