I thought R1 was DICK CLARK with no letters. Here are the puzzles in case this gets pulled: Round 1: PERSON JOHN WAYNE
Round 2: TITLE BARNACLE BILL THE SAILOR
Round 3: TITLE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC

From the Autumn season as there's pumpkins on the prize area. Copyright dates on two of the commercials (Creamy Deluxe Frosting and Cycle Dog Food)look to read 1979 so this is likely from Fall 1979($750 on the round one wheel by December 1979). Possibly November 1979 for Sweeps, and it's known to be a Tuesday episode.

If it is 1979, then it's very early 1979, since it clearly predates the March 2 episode (still has rounded 7's on the Wheel, still only has five cash wedges separating the Bankrupts in Round 2).

Someone commented about the pumpkins in the middle of the shopping area. So this is certainly from the fall. Why would they be there any other time of the year? You have the $400 space between the $125 and $300 spaces being recolored from blue to red by this point. Finally, for the biggest giveaway, you have the sevens still being rounded. So there's little doubt in my mind that this was from the Fall of 1978, highly likely from Halloween time or Thanksgiving time of that year. I'm certain, however, we'll find out for sure, one way or another.

It's confirmed to be 1978. And in the second episode posted, they're playing for cash.

There's an ad for a sale ending on Monday October 23 in the second of the three videos, so these two episodes would probably be either from 10/10(Tue) and 10/13(Fri) or 10/17(Tue) and 10/20(Fri)

Since most sales of department stores don't last more than a week, these are believed to be from October 17 and 20. Don't bother with the second half of part 3, and I don't think there is really anything from parts 4 and 5. Still it's interesting to hear a different ding sound (best associated with shows like the '80s version of Pyramid, Bergeron Hollywood Squares, among others. This Friday episode was a rare instance of a cash episode for this era along with six rounds played. Crazy to think that more Wheel survives from the 1978-79 "season" than the TPIR from that season which currently circulates!
Of course, that mishap was bound to happen by Dan on the Tuesday show involving the gift certificate. It also find it also weird in that three players split cash, despite only one player playing for the entire show. Sure, the "team" idea I don't mind, but it would have been better if the team members rotated after each round or two so that most importantly, everyone can play! Thankfully, on the Goen version, appropriately on another Armed Forces week, they did rotate after each round.

Skimming through for now (though you better believe I downloaded these), but I'd like to nominate the shot at 10:25 of Part 3 for "most crowded Wheel contestant shot ever". The Griffin logo pops up a few seconds later over the same shot, the only time I've seen it that way. Chuck and Susan's comments suggest this is the first Armed Forces Week. Also...wow that ding sound was weird. And something else I haven't seen noticed: no Star Bonus. (Admittedly, it could've been like the daytime Jackpot and removed for special weeks.) Crazy to think that more Wheel survives from the 1978-79 "season" than the TPIR from that season which currently circulates! Lemme see...three episodes and parts of three others for Wheel, one episode and parts of four others for Price. Damn.

Is it known how much of 1978 the Star bonus lasted for?

Is it known how much of 1978 the Star bonus lasted for? Not unless somebody has access to the show's records. (Anybody? Nobody?) It debuted in the second half of March '78 and continued until...late Spring, maybe? The Star Wheel debut episode of Match Game '78 seems to reference it (Gene mentions landing in the "gold star area", and Dawson says "Chuck Woolery comes out and punches you in the mouth"), and that was taped around May or early June.

I got more excited watching that cash final than I have watching current episodes of Wheel.
