Here's a master copy of the show complete with slate (which is how I'm getting this date).

I ain't even mad that the video's labeled 1983 - it's a friggin' master copy.
Another reason I like master copies: you get fun adlibs like Jack's "Wheel of Syndicated Fortune" remark. Hey, it was making bank...
Speaking of the slate, the "(SYNDICATION)" distinction is still present. It was gone by #S-1000 in 1988, by which point the show had switched to digital slates.

WAG here, but I'd assume that they started using digital slates somewhere near the beginning of 1985. I'm basing this on three things... 1. The master copies of Sale of the Century that Winc uploaded to YT, which all use digital slates, 2. Jeopardy! using digital slates around that same time (by their March 1986 tapings, at the very least) 3. The other graphical changes Wheel made in '85, such as ditching the old 3M Datavision character generator (the computer used to make the old "monospaced font" category displays and whatnot) in favor of a proper Chyron graphics system, and switching the credits from using a crawl board to being electronically generated as well. Random speculation aside, things like these are always great to see.
