This happens every year on ABC affiliates nationwide. It's nothing new. Wheel always gets preempted by basketball on Christmas Day. If the game ends early, they fill the remaining time with post-game discussion.
Why bring this up so far in advance? And isn't the game usually scheduled until 8 Eastern?

Christmas is still a good four months out, Scott. Lots of things can change between now and then. As an aside, if you want to add something to a post, just click the edit button/cogwheel image. You don't need to repeatedly make new posts. This happens every year on ABC affiliates nationwide. It seems he thinks Wheel's an ABC show, which it isn't (and never has been). |

The amount of pre-emptions for sports in the past few years by the major networks is absolutely ridiculous. With the ever-increasing amount of the sports that the traditional major networks are airing these days, they might as well convert to all-sports networks.
I'm surprised that more The CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates haven't been able to take over Wheel and J! in much of the US. I'm beginning to wonder if eventually, the "Prime-Time Access Rule" (that opened the 7PM Eastern hour for local stations to schedule their own programming) that allowed the nighttime Wheel to be a thing in the first place will be declared obsolete and scrapped (meaning the major networks will be taking back that hour between the network evening news and the current Monday-Saturday start of prime time).

I don't see the networks taking back an hour they gave to the local stations. To begin with, A lot of those network stations are airing shows between 7-8PM that get higher ratings than a lot of network shows do, including Wheel, Jeopardy, Judge Judy, and not-so Family Feud.

According to Wikipedia, ABC has broadcast an NBA game on Christmas Day every year since 1967. Most of these were doubleheaders, except for 2004 and 2006, where they only aired one game. This year will be a tripleheader starting at 3 Eastern, though apparently 2014 also had a tripleheader that started at 12 Eastern.
Since each game is scheduled for 2.5 hours with the final game airing at 8 Eastern, then Wheel should be okay in markets that air it at 7:30 Pacific (including KABC) if the game ends on time, no? Or will post-game discussion take up the 7:30-8:00 slot?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the only years where first-run Wheel has not been preempted by Christmas Day basketball on ABC in ET/CT markets are: 1983, 1988, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2016. All of these years had Christmas Day on a Saturday or Sunday, and 2006 had its game at 2 PM Eastern. Next weekend Christmas Day isn't until 2021.

Most people know FLorida and the Carolinas have potential for impact on a possible category 4 or 5 hurricane in Irma between Sat-Tue or so. And of course, the newest post at Golden-road.net this morning by PGS25, which the moderators did not delete, asks what "kind of impact would Hurricane Irma have on Wheel, Jeopardy, and TPIR"

Come to think of it, I wonder if they intentionally do the Christmas-themed weeks early because of the annual ABC pre-emption. Kind of makes sense especially when Christmas Day falls on a Monday.
