Nighttime Wheel of Fortune - February 1986
"Look at this studio, filled with glamorous prizes! Fabulous and exciting merchandise, including a luxurious, $6,500 full-length mink coat! A pair of $6,800 platinum, gold and diamond ear clips! And Cadillac's customized midsize sedan! Over $142,000 just waiting to be won on WHEEL OF FORTUNE! And now here is your host, Pat Sajak!"
As Pat introduces Vanna, she almost misses her cue, and can be seen running through the curtain (how she's able to run in heels, I'll never know). Pat chides her slightly, asking "running late, are you?"
Tonight's players are...
Janet Doherty, from Royal Oak, MI, she works for "a major automotive company" and recently "piloted a major blimp" (read: she works for Goodyear, most likely)
Nina Ozio (not sure of the exact spelling), works as a "pre-Grade 1" school teacher, recently moved to California from Toronto, Canada
Rich Mackinac, from Minneapolis, MN, is a student at the University of Minnesota studying finance and business, enjoys golfing and "anything in the snow"
Top dollar for the first round is $1,000, try not to hit Bankrupt because if you do you lose your cash, but not your merchandise because once you buy a prize, it's yours to keep. The first puzzle of the night is a PHRASE.

Janet will start Round 1, and she does so by spinning and landing on $350. She calls T, and there is one T, giving her $350.
Janet spins again, and hits the LOSE A TURN.
Nina spins, and lands on $250. She asks for an H, and finds one, starting her off with $250.
Nina spins again, and hits BANKRUPT.
Rich spins, and lands on $900. He calls N, and there is one N, giving him $900.
Rich spins again, and lands on $700. He calls G, and gets one, bringing him up to $1,600.
Rich asks to buy a vowel, an E. There are two E's, taking him down to $1,350.
Rich asks to buy another vowel, an I. There is one I, taking him down to $1,100.
Rich spins, and lands on $250. He calls C, and finds one, bringing him back to $1,350.
Rich spins again, and lands on $150. He calls D, and there is one D, bringing him up to $1,500.
Rich spins again, and barely avoids Bankrupt, landing on $750. He calls R, and receives two R's, doubling up to $3,000.
R - - - I N G
T H E / C R - D - E
Rich asks to solve, and correctly says ROBBING THE CRADLE, winning the round with $3,000.
With that $3,000, Rich will go shopping in the "Lover's Retreat" area. He buys...
for $730, a 20-inch color TV, leaving him with $2,270
for $667, a comforter, with $1,603 to go
for $990, his-and-hers watches. He still has $613 left to spend
for $155, a lithograph. His total is now $458
for $400, a set of drapery. He has $58 left, which he chooses to put on a Gucci gift certificate.
At the end of Round 1, the scores are...
Janet: $0
Nina: $0
Rich: $3,000
For Round 2, the top value is still $1,000, and there's also a prize on the Wheel: a sterling silver music box by Cartier, with a hand-enameled dragon design on the lid, valued at $2,800. It is marked "SILVER" on the Wheel, and if you land on it, the prize will go in your bank, and if you win the round without hitting Bankrupt, you'll win it. Be careful though, there's a second Bankrupt on the Wheel for this round. The category for this round is PHRASE.

Nina will start Round 2, and her first spin is just shy of the silver, landing on $800. She calls T, and there are three T's, starting her off with $2,400.
Nina asks to buy a vowel, an E. There are four E's, taking her down to $2,150.
Nina spins, hitting LOSE A TURN.
Rich spins, and he lands on $250. He calls R, and finds two of them, giving him $500.
Rich spins again, landing on $200. He calls G, and gets one, bringing him up to $700.
Rich spins again, landing on $400. He calls S, but there are none.
Janet spins, and lands on $600. She calls Y, and there are two Y's, giving her $1,200.
Janet spins again, landing on $700. She asks for an F, and finds one F, bringing her to $1,900.
Janet spins again, landing on $400. She calls L, and receives three of them, bringing her total up to $3,100.
Janet spins again (saying "one more time" as she does so), and calls W. There are two of them, bringing her to $3,500.

W - L L / G E T

Janet asks to solve, but misses with FLATTERY WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE. As a result, we go to Nina. Pat takes a moment to "shh!" the audience and remind them not to say anything.
Nina spins, and lands on $500. She calls N, and there is one, bringing her to $2,650.
F L - T T E R Y
W - L L / G E T

N - W - E R E
Nina asks to solve, and does so with FLATTERY WILL GET YOU NOWHERE. She wins the round with $2,650 in her bank.
And now Nina will spend her $2,650 in the "cozy kitchen". She buys...
for $1,995, kitchen cabinets. She has $655 left
for $399, a microwave oven, leaving her with $256
for $244, a ceramic greyhound. She has $12 remaining, which she puts on a gift certificate.
At the end of Round 2, the scores are...
Janet: $0
Nina: $2,650
Rich: $3,000
For Round 3, there is a $5,000 space on the Wheel. The category for this round is OCCUPATION.

- - - - - - - - - - -
Rich will start Round 3, and he starts it by spinning and landing on $550. He calls T, and there are three T's, giving him $1,650.
Rich spins again, landing on $500. He asks for an R, and receives two of them, bringing him to $2,650.

Rich asks to buy another vowel, an A. There is one A, taking him down to $4,650.
Rich asks for a third vowel, E. There is one E, taking his score to $4,400. Though Pat neglects to mention it, all of the vowels are now revealed.
Rich spins, and lands on $500. He asks for an N, and gets one, bringing him back up to $4,900.
Rich spins again, landing on $550. He calls H, and hears the buzzer (and the groans of the audience with it)
.
Janet spins, and lands on $250. She calls S, which there are two of, giving her $500.
Janet spins again, landing on $200. She calls a P, uncovering the last remaining letter in the puzzle, bringing her up to $700.
S P O R T S
C O M M E N T A T O R
With a fully-exposed puzzle before her (and Pat facetiously asking "Please, no help from the audience!"), Janet says the answer and wins $700.
With her $700, Janet will shop in the "outdoor fun" area. She buys
for $398, a barbecue. With $302 her next choice is...
for $280, a pair of ten-speed bikes. She chooses to place her remaining $22 on a gift certificate.
At the conclusion of Round 3, the final scores for the night are...
Janet: $700
Nina: $2,650
Rich: $3,000
And despite his surprising misstep near the end of Round 3, Rich holds on for the win, and will be playing the Bonus Round.
In an unusual move, before the start of the Bonus Round, Pat has Rich's friends in the audience come up on stage and congratulate him for winning the game and making it this far. Rich chooses to play for a trip to Bermuda, valued at $2,992. Tonight's bonus puzzle is a PERSON.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Rich chooses R, S, T, L, N, and E for his letters. He has the following to work with...
- - - - E L - N - E L -
He spends 15 seconds trying to sound out various things, but doesn't come up with any solid guesses. Before revealing the full solution, Pat has Vanna turn over the first letter, which was an M. Rich is still clueless, so Vanna reveals the full answer as MICHELANGELO. Rich leaves with $3,000 in prizes.
In the final segment, Vanna mentions that she is wearing $23,000 in jewelry at the moment. Pat jokes "we'll take that stuff off her, and put some new stuff on her for our next show", and they say goodbye.
Follwing the fee plugs, we hear Jack Clark say "if you'd like to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, send a postcard to
Wheel of Fortune
P.O. Box 4356
Hollywood, CA 90078
Though he doesn't verbally point it out, there is also a phone number on screen: 213-520-5555 (as a slight aside, I have to wonder if either that P.O. Box or phone number are still in service for Wheel nowadays...)
And I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it!
