Hi all, New here, but have been navigating these boards for a while now. Been working on my own wheel for a bit and wanted to share a video and some photos:    I designed/engineered the wheel flippers myself (3D printed with PLA and TPE materials). There is a 608 ball bearing inside each one so that you get an authentic "wiggle" like you see on the show.. for the most part--they are very fluid and bouncy. I studied the flippers just by watching the show and seeing how they move, gathered some information about their design from these boards, and then a lot of trial and error. The wheel itself is approximately 24" wide, utilizing a 12" thrust ball bearing underneath for the fluid spinning. I wrapped the wooden wheel with metal not just only for looks, but to give it some extra weight for a nice spin. The steel pins/pegs are actually extra-long 1.5" rivets that are held down tight by the wheel insert. The wheel graphic itself was designed custom (using the amazing wedge graphics and templates found here from MarioGS, WheelGenius, and others). Utilized a large-format printer to spit out the wheel design itself and then mounted it on foam board--trimming to fit. A layer of 1/8" plexiglass sits over the wheel which allows me to use those really great scotch connectors for easy wedge, gift, and 1/2 car tag addition and removal--plus it just looks nice. I have 2 different wheel graphic inserts--the custom one above, and the official season 34 layout--which is also the PS4/Xbox One layout. On game nights with friends, we use a custom powerpoint for the puzzle board that has click-to-reveal letters and all of the applicable sounds you could encounter on the show (1/2 car, express, mystery wedge, bankrupt, etc.). Just come up with some puzzles, toss it up on the TV in the living room, and get to playing. I also have a custom excel spreadsheet to keep score easily. Next up for this project will likely be to emulate the show a little bit when it comes to the Express, Jackpot, and Free Play wedges--in the works right now to build a thicker, plexiglass version of these with LEDs that can be switched on and off. Also, by leveraging some see-through/clear 3D printing PLA material for the raised lettering on the wedges, it will create a similar effect to the wedges in use today on the show.. this will likely take some time to get right. How do you mount on foam board? Did you have to go to a print shop? How did you cut the layout into a circle so cleanly?
That's quite a layout! A lot of add-ons and four-digit values. Do you use that layout for all rounds in your games or do you cover up the higher values with lower ones in early rounds? I'm curious what the bare layout looks like with all the add-ons removed.
Any way we can get a video of a few spins with the real show's layout?

A large format printer prints out the wheel on a glossy roll of paper, which is cut and then mounted on foam board. The wheel image and the foam board are then trimmed together so the edges are clean, followed by a large lamination packet that then basically "seals" them together. The end product is then trimmed one last time (the result is a square). After that, I cut out the circle using a very sharp and long razor blade--I make multiple passes and I take it very, very slowly cutting it out. I am in love with this custom layout. It's completely unrealistic, but that's what makes it so much fun. Feedback from those that play on this wheel with me are that they love getting to detach and collect the items off the wheel (it's one of my favorite things as well), and that the high amount of four-digit values can make the game take a turn quickly in someone's favor. You would be surprised how normal most rounds are with this wheel, though! Bankrupt is a pretty powerful wedge.  Here's the custom layout without any add-ons:  Here's the season 34/PS4/Xbox One layout without any add-ons:  For the custom wheel, the game would start with: two 1/2 car tags, 1 gift tag, wild card, million wedge, $25k wedge, travel wedge. The typical order of rounds and their add-ons would be: Surprise Round - A surprise wedge is added just for this round Mystery Round - 2 mystery wedges are added just for this round Jackpot Round - A jackpot wedge is added just for this round Express Round - An express wedge is added just for this round Prize Puzzle Round - Instead of winning a prize for solving, a random number of wedge types are added based on the hosts decision--it should probably be called the mashup round or something. There is a maximum of two 1/2 car tags per round, that are replenished through all 5 rounds as needed. The gift tag is also replenished each round as needed. There is only 1 wild card, 1 million wedge, and 1 $25k wedge--once they're off, they're off. I'll put together a video of spins with the real wheel layout soon! It follows the exact same rules as the show would when it comes to wedges, add-ons, etc. |

Sounds so very close to the real wheel. Plus, the numbers on the wheel remind me of the UK version of WOF. Either way, you did a bang-up job there. I mean you made this thing like a pro.

Here's what I used for the spinning mechanism: 6" Inch (150mm) Aluminum Lazy Susan Bearing Turntable Bearings BC Precision Link: a.co/7yl1wAjA good rule with these types (I believe this is along the lines of a thrust ball bearing) is that your weight/load on it must be enough for it to run smoothly. So for example, if you install a ball bearing made for around 750-1000lbs (bar stool bearing, perhaps?), you're not going to reach that sort of load and so it won't spin very well. For these made-at-home wheels, usually the smaller you can get away with the better. |
