In this installment of the Evaluation series, a new kind of puzzle for the first time in...well, basically ever. HOW IT WORKS:- The puzzle is laid out in a crossword fashion, and the "category" is a clue that applies to all the words in the puzzle.
- The round is otherwise played normally.
- When solving, the player must read all words--horizontal and vertical--in the puzzle, and may not add extraneous words such as AND.
WHAT WE KNOW:- The American version of the show is not the first Wheel franchise to try this. The current Spanish version used them only for a year, 2013-2014 (although some rounds designated "Disordered Puzzles" were known to have laid out puzzles in this fashion as late as 2017). The original German version is also known to have used them much earlier.
WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW:- Just...why?
- For which puzzle is the writing worse: this or the Prize Puzzle?

1. I believe that this one of those "ways" for Sony to save money even though there could have been other options as well (Decreasing the number of Jeopardy episodes from 220 to 195). I do like the idea of the Crossword, even though a lot of them are solved for the house minimum. 2. The Prize Puzzle. Crosswords take a lot of thought and effort. I do know that they can have very evil negbaits like COLA and BETA and that the clues can get a little lazy, but they are much better than the Prize Puzzle writing imo. Prize puzzles often don't have much variety. Still, I like this mechanic and hope to use it in my home games (though not every time).

The prize puzzles are tiresome and the writing is beyond predictable now.
On the other hand, the crosswords actually take skill and thought to write.
I enjoy the crosswords and look forward to them.
One could probably say that the crossword is the New before & after.

1. I believe that this one of those "ways" for Sony to save money. Bingo. Running the numbers from the compendium in this season alone, file here if anyone is interested, crossword puzzles have an average of around 13.11 consonants, while regular R1-R3 puzzles have around 13.85. To add to this, I didn't account for overlapping letters, so I would expect the average number of consonants for crosswords to be closer to 12 unique consonants, and maybe even less. - For which puzzle is the writing worse: this or the Prize Puzzle?
Usual Prize Puzzle writing is much worse. Even when it is just a Fill in the Blank with no bonus, at 95% of the time all the words make sense.

I am still shocked that up to this point nobody has added an "AND" or an "A" when trying to solve.
I know Pat reminds the contestants every time, but the bright lights cause funny things to happen.
It must be something they really focus on during prep.

I am still shocked that up to this point nobody has added an "AND" or an "A" when trying to solve. At least two people to date have added "AND".

Also something else that just popped into my head: do you think the Crossword suffers from a lack of depth when the longest vertical word they can place can only be 4 letters long, and the shortest (most likely) only 3?

A little.
No need to quote the post directly above yours...especially when you're only going to add two words. --JW

"Just...why?" I don't like the Crossword Puzzle anymore because they are really hard for me. I just think of it as an excuse to bring "Fill in the Blank" back, but give the blank in the Crossword Clue so they don't have to do bonus questions anymore. "For which puzzle is the writing worse: this or the Prize Puzzle?" The Crossword because of the "Fill in the Blank" thing I mentioned.
