Now that the Tournament of Champions have wrapped up, I'm wondering if Sony is planning a special tournament or event where they'll pit James Holzhauer against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Especially because James won the ToC, many people are now talking about a matchup of the three Jeopardy! super-champions, possibly happening later this season – like maybe an exhibition match like they did with Watson back in S27, a five-day affair where scores get added up to determine the winner, or a second installation of the Million Dollar Masters Tournament. But I definitely don't see them doing a second UToC where they automatically place James in the finals because they already did such an event in S21; and they don't need to do it again. What are your ideas for a Brad vs. Ken vs. James matchup?
My idea is they do a second MMMT and air it in February or May 4-15, the latter dates being taped at DAR Constitution Hall (the matchup I think should be held this season because of Alex's health). And it is Ken, Brad, and James competing with 12 former champions and ToC winners/semifinalists/finalists who appeared on the show between Ken's original run and this year's ToC. The winner receives a $1M top prize, second place gets $200K, and third place $100K.
List of participants:
•James Holzhauer (32-game champion, 2019 ToC winner, biggest winner of Season 35) •Ken Jennings (74-game champion, UToC finalist, Battle of the Decades finalist, All-Star Games finalist, biggest winner of Seasons 20 and 21) •Brad Rutter (5-game champion*, 2001 ToC winner, Million Dollar Masters Tournament winner, UToC winner, All-Star Games winner) •Austin Rogers (12-game champion, 2017 ToC finalist, biggest winner of Season 34) •Julia Collins (20-game winner, 2014 ToC finalist, biggest winner of Season 30) •Ben Ingram (8-game champion, 2014 ToC winner, biggest winner of Season 29) •Matt Jackson (13-game champion, 2015 ToC finalist, All-Star Games finalist, biggest winner of Season 32) •Roger Craig (6-game champion, 2011 ToC winner, Battle of the Decades finalist) •Dan Pawson (9-game champion, 2009 ToC winner) •David Madden (19-game champion, 2006 ToC semifinalist, All-Star Games winner, biggest winner of Season 22) •Larissa Kelly (6-game champion, 2009 ToC finalist, All-Star Games winner, biggest winner of Season 24) •Vijay Balse (4-game champion, 2010 ToC winner) •Colby Burnett (2012 Teacher's Tournament winner, 2013 ToC winner, Battle of the Decades semifinalist, All-Star Games finalist) •Alex Jacob (6-game champion, 2015 ToC winner) •Buzzy Cohen (9-game champion, 2017 ToC winner)
*denotes original run taking place when the 5-game limit for returning champions was in effect
You know how TTTB selected Emma Boettcher to participate in this year's ToC, which eventually set up the rematch vs. James in the finals? The matchup of James against Ken and Brad in the next special tournament will really be one for the ages.

Tournament of Champions, where Mr. James Holzhauer prevailed over Emma and Francois (and redeemed himself after losing to Emma previously), James is set to make yet another Jeopardy! appearance, as will two other familiar faces. In the beginning of 2020, James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter, regarded as the best Jeopardy! players of all time, will square off against each other in a Jeopardy! GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Tournament, which will consist of a series of "matches". The first to win three matches will win a $1,000,000 prize. I think this will play out like the tournament finales on Jeopardy!, in that two games will be played, and whoever has the highest total from the two games combined wins the game, or "match" in this case. Tournament will go on as long as needed until one of the three wins three matches. This is set to air on ABC at the beginning of 2020. - acwof

The latest addition to the "signs Harry much prefers Jeopardy! to Wheel" list. Typical that Jeopardy! gets another shot at primetime while Wheel still hasn't even gotten its first yet. If he cared about both shows equally, Wheel would have a special with the three millionaires. Thanks, Harry Friedman... -_-
We have the hyped Vanna-hosted episodes to look forward to, but after that, I guess it'll be another several months of Wheel being eclipsed in Jeopardy!'s shadow again.

I'd imagine ABC had a lot more to do with it than Harry. Gotta capitalize on James while they can still make money on it after all, especially with Alex's failing health.
This isn't an issue of Harry or Sony preferring one show over the other.

From a money standpoint, it makes sense. However, considering that J! and Wheel are constantly associated with one another (How often can you have a conversation about Wheel these days without somebody mentioning J!?), ABC should have at least picked up the two in a "double feature" sort of thing. I was really hoping ABC, with how much it banks on game shows nowadays, would give Wheel its primetime spotlight before giving J! another one, but of course, most of the media and general public don't treat the two shows as a "game show power couple" anymore like they used to. They basically were almost-always treated as a single entity, but they hardly ever are anymore. The Jeopardy! bias just grows every year.
And even if ABC did pick up the two together, people will probably scoff when they hear the Wheel chant and change the channel, like so many people already do with the regular shows. A lot of people foolishly want Wheel cancelled and replaced with either an additional J!, or have J! expand to an hour to replace Wheel's slot. This is probably (and hopefully) the closest thing we'll get to that. But this whole thing gives more leverage to all the "Wheel is Jeopardy! for dummies/Nobody cares about Wheel" arguments.
We will have to rely on Mike Richards to push primetime Wheel, no doubt. Even if it does happen, it definitely won't be a tournament; just a one-off special or small spin-off series. "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune" seems most likely, or maybe "Super Wheel of Fortune".
ABC already has experience in pushing Wheel in Jeopardy!'s shadow. Just last Wednesday, all of the ABC O&O's pre-empted Wheel (but not J!) with the CMA Red Carpet, while J! had its TOC, causing the ratings gap between the two shows to grow even more, with hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Wheel viewers collectively lost in top markets like NY, LA, Chicago, and Philly during a sweeps week. If the Red Carpet conflicted with J! in those cities, there's no way ABC would have let all those markets pre-empt it.

I know this is not a section of the forum that I moderate (I only moderate the "Tonight on WOF" section), so excuse me if I'm about to act like a "backseat moderator" when I say this. MarioGS , I know I've told you this before, but I do wish you wouldn't get so shook up whenever it seems like great things are happening to Jeopardy!, but not Wheel of Fortune. Remember that events like these happen not just because of Jeopardy!'s rule of returning champions, but the positive attention and publicity J! has gotten from Mr. James, Mr. Ken, and Mr. Brad. Now, just because J! gets a lot of positive attention doesn't mean that WOF doesn't get positive attention. Remember Blair recently going viral because of his hilarious introduction, or Mr. Emil's New Baby Buggy solve from almost six years ago? Sure, the attention may not have lasted as long as something Jeopardy! related, but Wheel of Fortune can get its fair share of positive attention. They even reference these famous moments in clip shows, commercials, etc., so these memorable moments are certainly not forgotten. (I'm not regarding infamous puzzle mis-solves when I'm talking about "positive attention", but those can count as positive attention, too.) As a final food for thought, please take this excerpt from an article about Harry Friedman's departure from being EP of Wheel and J! into consideration, especially the text in bold. (Credit to the Variety website.): “I think all of you know how much I love these shows, and that I deeply respect how hard you’ve worked to make them so successful,” Friedman said when he made the announcement to his team. Even Mr. Friedman thinks that WOF is still successful. Heck, WOF wouldn't be successful without Mr. Friedman, or even J! by its side. Both are accountable for WOF still existing in today's world. Please don't let something like this get to you; it's just a game. - acwof

I remember Mike Richards did a special primetime TPIR back in 5/25/16. I really liked it. So yeah I hope he does a Primetime Wheel. I remember someone on this forum saying when Wheel was pushed back to 8 PM they said it is as close as we can get to primetime Wheel.

Now, just because J! gets a lot of positive attention doesn't mean that WOF doesn't get positive attention. That's true, but Wheel gets a lot less positive attention. Compare how much negative attention each show gets as well, and Wheel easily outpaces Jeopardy! there. “I think all of you know how much I love these shows, and that I deeply respect how hard you’ve worked to make them so successful,” Friedman said when he made the announcement to his team. Even so, there remains a marked disparity between the two shows in terms of stuff like utilizing current pop culture and being inclusive, which would be at least a bit understandable if the staff didn't overlap so much. Harry's treatment of Wheel comes across to me like he's considered the show as little more than a paycheck for at least the past few years, if not longer.

My prediction:
James wins the event and takes home the $1,000,000 prize, while Ken and Brad take home $250K apiece. As a result, James surpasses Ken for second-highest winnings all-time because the former will have won $3.71M and the latter $3.62M. However, Brad will still be the biggest money winner on the show, even if he loses; his overall winnings will have increased to $4.93M.
James is at the peak of his Jeopardy! career, while I think Ken and Brad are past their prime.

Grabbed this screenshot during an ad break before this evening's Wheel. Looks like the set got a bit of a remodel for the event. Wish they didn't go so dark on the color scheme, but it's interesting that the set even went through any changes for this limited series event. There will be a preview of the show during tomorrow morning's GMA. imgur.com/a/TlZIpST

I would make a Holzhauer daily double-sized bet on Brad to win it. Never lost to a human being, ever--that's absurd. Even if he weren't the best of the three straight up, he has to be the most comfortable with the J! tournament setting given how many he's been in and won without flinching.
I think based on the difficulty of questions we tended to see James buzz on during his run and the ones we saw him opt out of he has less pure trivia muscle than Ken did in his prime, but then, Ken's run was fifteen years ago, and James is certainly no stranger to leveraging buzzer control and bets to make games into runaways even if Ken or Brad can hit answers that James can't.
My completely unsubstantiated guess is that we see James and Ken each take a game with Brad taking the overall victory on day 5.

Well, I just watched the first match, and unfortunately Ken won the opener, and not James. I hope James wins the next three and thereby winning the event . That being said, besides the cosmetic changes to the set, there is indeed a new music package created for the event sushibarset14. The main theme is now an arrangement for heavy orchestra and synthesizers, and the Think! music is heavier sounding than the other versions. Also the think cue is in the same key as the main theme, and is now pitched a semitone lower than the current think cue on the syndicated series.

My completely unsubstantiated guess is that we see James and Ken each take a game with Brad taking the overall victory on day 5. Well this prediction isn't looking too good if we go off of Day 1 performances. In spite of hitting a mountain of Daily Doubles Brad just couldn't get his feet under him; honestly he kind of looked like an amateur in comparison to his (admittedly fearsome) competition. James put up a totally respectable showing but there was no question that Ken was in control from G1 Double J! all the way through the end of the episode. He played as well as he ever did during his murderous original run. There's obviously a ton of gameplay yet to come but after such a decisive loss I'd have to say Brad will need a major shift in his approach if he is going to take any of the days' matches.

The strong presentation and performances apparently led to excellent ratings. According to figures from Nielsen and published by Zap2it, the first match brought in a ratings share of 2.4/11, or roughly 14.37 million viewers for the hour. This demolished its competition in its timeslot, including NCIS on CBS (10.28M) and Ellen's Game of Games on NBC (4.35M) and easily led the night. For comparison, the end of James' original run on the syndicated program brought in roughly the same amount of viewers (~14.5M for his last show; source). For the week so far, it was only beaten by the Golden Globes telecast on Sunday. It also raked in more viewers than the premiere of this season of The Masked Singer on FOX. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ratings hold or even rise as the competition continues, and it will be even more interesting to see how/if this will affect the viewership of the main show. For reference, the folks at BuzzerBlog note that these numbers are unprecedented for a quiz show in the modern era, in the ballpark of shows airing during the 2000s primetime game show phenomenon, including The Weakest Link, Greed, and Deal or No Deal. In fact, J!: GOAT is the 2nd most-watched game show debut since WWTBAM's 1999 debut. Unreal.

Just in; James turned the tables on Ken and took the second match of the tournament. But in a way, the second game of the match was rather disappointing because Brad finished DJ! with a negative score and was eliminated from FJ! Interestingly however, he was present at his lectern; normally, when a contestant finishes DJ! with 0 or a negative score, he or she isn't on the set for FJ!

Quick ratings update for night 2: 14.82M for the timeslot, about a 400K improvement over the previous night (even enough to improve Modern Family's viewership to its best since the Fall 2017 season premiere).

James and Brad's final responses tonight were hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. James wrote who is the greatest television host Alex Trebek. Accidentally wrote Pat Sajak then scratched it out. Brad wrote down Eagles Super Bowl LII champions. He risked 4133 which was the score of the game. That was so funny
