Brazil has recently adopted a bonus round based entirely on luck. Instead of being asked to solve a puzzle, you're asked if you think a firetruck, ambulance, or police car will win a race. And I thought the trivia questions in the UK version were out of place.

^ As far as I am aware, the trivia questions were there for legal reasons. I don't think there's much leeway for Brazil's change.

I'm aware of what the broadcast rules in the UK used to be as regards game shows. In their defense, they made you know more than just what are likely fits in the puzzle. The new Brazilian BR is out in left field.

Bringing this back up because Brazilian Wheel has changed a bit. I was hoping they'd bring back the stuff they had ten years ago or maybe even have their version of the Express, but instead, the changes are very minor. Any opinions on these changes?

They still need to get with the program and make the contestants buy the vowels.

I think the right to spin for vowels balances out when it's possible for a main-game puzzle to just go unsolved (and thus nobody wins any money that round).

So, I'm brazilian, and since 2018 (I think) the format changed. It airs mon-fri in the 8:30pm slot, and sundays at 7:30. Hosted by Silvio's daughter, Rebecca Abravanel, the daytime version consists of 4 rounds. First round is only one word, no category is given, worth 5,000 and the turn for the next round. The contestant only gets the right to answer if a consonant is said. If the answer is incorrect, the contestant is out of the round. The next 3 rounds are the same. Generally there are 2-3 words related to the category, and no phrases like US version. 20 amounts of money, ranging from 50 to 1,000 (the higher values are next to Bankrupt and Lose a Turn wedges), 2 Bankrupt and 2 Lose a Turn wedges. The contestants still can't buy vowels, and they are forced to answer the puzzle when there are 3 letters remaining to be revealed. There are no special wedges yet (shame). At the end of the rounds, who scored nothing wins 2,000, who scored something but isn't the top winner gets to keep the money and who got the highest score goes to the final round. In the final round, the contestant chooses one out of ten one-word puzzles. The category is given, and the contestant chooses four consonants and one vowel. For each letter that occurs in the word, 1,000 is given. Then, the contestant gets 10 seconds to think and then answer. Answering correctly, doubles the winnings. The primetime version is mostly hosted by Silvio himself, and it's the same thing as the daytime. The only difference is the final round, where there it is a race between a fireman, an ambulance and a police cars. A previous reply explains how it works very well. The top prize used to be a car, but now it is something around 30,000. The show is still being sponsored by Jequiti, and by some other business (Baú da Felicidade, Telesena). If you have any questions about Roda a Roda, I'll try to answer them

One thing I noticed is that for the last few years now, there are what appear to be prize wedges covering $350, $400, $450, and $500. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how they work. How do they?

After almost a year, here i am with new information about the new refurbished Roda a Roda.
First of all, they stopped recording in March/2020 due to Covid restrictions, since the contestants come from all over the country. During that period, the rerun episodes were mixed (the first round was from one episode, then the next ones were from totally different episodes). Between the first round and the second one, there was a giveaway where Luís Ricardo (who hosted Roda before) randomly picked three of the coupons from the box (one at a time), and there was a wheel much like those american lottery shows had (The Big Spin and Spin The Wheel, though it's not a lotto show) with increasing amounts from 1K to 12K.
In the first days of June/2021, it was announced that Roda A Roda would come back with a new set and a new host (since Rebecca is in the USA with her family), which is Luís Ricardo. The first episode aired on June 14th, and the first thing you'll notice is that the set has indeed changed, but you can lower your expectations.
The set does not feature anymore the pillars that were by the sides of both videowalls, Plexiglass panels and alcohol gel were added; New lighting assets were added (B-Eyes, Moving heads, Beam lights), which together they form an "asterisk shaped" beam arch. But the worst things of this new season are the new colours. They switched the blue tonalities by a eye-hurting lime green. That is the main colour of the new board, which also took off the yellow squares indicating where the letters are when called out. Now the host counts them one by one. The unused squares, now feature the logo from the show and from Jequiti, the main and only sponsor.
Game wise, it remains the same. First round, it's the "blind round"; It's worth 5k and the turn for the next round. Generally it's a 9-12 letter word, without clues. The contestant only gets to solve when calls out a consonant. In case of a wrong answer, they are out from the round.
Rounds 2 and 3 got interesting, as there are new puzzles. For example, when a clue was "Countries", the words were names of countries. But now, it's something related in any form to the clue. So, for example again, instead of names of countries, there could be words like "Territory" , "Government", "States", and so on. IMO, that improved the game a lot, points to the production team.
But those points gets quickly taken out when you notice that the pointers were tighted, which causes the wheel to not be able to do a full spin in most of the cases, lasting not any longer than 5-7 seconds. The wheel pattern also got changed, now it got 3 Lose-A-Turn wedges and only one Bankrupt wedge. This change was caused due to the economy going shit right now, and the network wants to somehow help these contestants That's the reason why the consolation prize is 2K.
Final round, the same. Contestant picks 1 out of 10 one-word puzzles, four consonants and one vowel. No money is given when a letter occurs in the word, like before. Should the participant get the word right, they double their pot.
It's airing a bit late now from monday to friday, last time i've watched it was at 8:50 PM, and as i've mentioned before it's being hosted by Luís Ricardo. The sunday edition still airs in the 7PM slot, now hosted by Patrícia Abravanel (one of Silvio's 7 daughters, which also hosted the short-lived brazilian revival of Deal Or No Deal in 2019-2020). The final round in the sunday edition is the car race, where the contestant picks either a firetruck, ambulance, or a police car. This round is worth 35K, but the contestant may stop when there's a risk, earning 2K for each step their car took.

I think there have been three Lose A Turn spaces and only one Bankrupt space since 2009 (I know how it was from 2003 to 2006 but wonder how things were back in 2007 and 2008). Anyway, sneak peek, anyone?

Quick update: SILVIO's BACK!
After almost 2 years without doing any presenting job, Silvio Santos recorded Roda a Roda on friday the 23rd and his own show on the 25th.
With his return, some of the set modifications (which i described in a few posts above) were reverted, such as the main color which is now back to blue, the on-screen graphics and the letter screen (i forgot to mention it in the past posts).
Since Silvio is 90 years old, the production team installed handrails which look like the same from ABC's Celebrity WOF. He's also struggling to remember how the game works, but i hope that as the time goes by, he'll get used to it once again.
Replying to germanname, you're right; I haven't paid attention to that, since i've been used to the Flash game version.

This is weird. A contestant landing on Passa A Vez and the witch appears. The witch only appers what a contestant land on Perde Tudo.

Yesterday, I learned that Silvio Santos had passed away at the age of 93. Having hosted a number of Brazilian shows such as Roletrando and Roda a Roda, he always seemed to have that positive and upbeat attitude that made him one of my favorite hosts of any version of Wheel of Fortune. This amazing and entertaining gentleman with his charismatic smile will certainly be missed by many.
