I'm due to go to the final audition in a couple of weeks and wondered how the written portion is? Difficult? Do they primarily use that to determine if they want you on the show?

Welcome. The show uses several factors to determine if you're a good fit for the show. The test is a big part of it, yes, but what's just as important is your competence calling letters, clarity in your voice, calling logical letters and your genuine enthusiasm. If you're good at solving puzzles along with the TV at home, then the test shouldn't be a problem. Most of the puzzles are pretty generous in terms of what letters/how many are revealed, and they do give you partial credit for attempting to fill in anything at all. There are 16 puzzles in 4 categories and you have 5 minutes to complete whatever you can. Best of luck at your audition!

I wouldn't classify the test I had as "generous" but I would definitely say they are doable as long as you look out for patterns (i.e. ING in "What are you doing?", etc.) Best bet is if you can't get a puzzle in full, try to fill in what you can (I.E. if you know the word ends in S or if you can get the first half). Use the categories for help.
I did notice that a lot of the categories were not the generic "THING" which was a help.

I wouldn't classify the test I had as "generous" Of course MarioGS would because he got a perfect score on the puzzle test. Him and emilburp (Freaks. ) Yes, to all the above. The test is not meant to be impossible, but it's not meant to be super-easy either. I think people have got on the show have gotten as little as 6/16. (This would be a good poll actually). If you score 0 on the test, that would be a red flag and you probably wouldn't get picked. They just want to see you're not a complete dummy at solving puzzles. It's more important to know the game really well and be able to play it at a good pace and call logical letters (AND BUY VOWELS as they tell you) and be enthusiastic and blah blah everything in ten96lt 's audition thread Courtesy of eybyon , here is a link to a gallery of screenshot from the contestant test from the 2003 PC game. I think it's a bit easier than the real test though (I got all of these fairly quickly, but got only about 12/16 on the actual audition test). They will tell you this also, but if a letter is in the puzzle, that means all instances of that letter are in the puzzle. imgur.com/a/pPMKD

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I am anxious to go to the audition and certainly going with an open mind. I have no expectations and am just going to have fun with it. Getting this far, for me, is an accomplishment in itself! tlc38tlc38, thank you for the practice puzzles!

I'm due to go to the final audition in a couple of weeks and wondered how the written portion is? Difficult? Do they primarily use that to determine if they want you on the show? Congratulations! If you haven't done it already, please see ten96lt fantastic write-up of the audition process. I firmly believe having a good idea of how the process was going to roll-out helped me to relax and to be myself! I also recommend getting to the audition as early as you can to ensure you are in one of the first few rows, to sit up in your chair, smile and make eye-contact, and to be genuinely enthusiastic! Nearly everyone at my audition was a good player -- the contestant coordinators are looking for the good players that will be entertaining as well! If you haven't already thought about what you would say in your "Pat Chat" please at least have something in mind. If you are selected to stay for the "after test" portion you will be asked to do it. I didn't have any idea of what to say and really felt like I had blown the audition by rambling when to my ear everyone else seemed so smooth. I'm not saying to rehearse something, but at least have an idea of what you are going to say! One thing that I didn't realize was that the contestant coordinators at the audition are the ones that you see when you go to tape your show! I guess I thought they had a "road team" that went out and made recommendations to the CCs back in the studio. So be sure to be nice!!!! Good luck and keep us posted!

When you want to list a spoiler, how do you do that with it being hidden?

I'm still stumped on PROPER NAME #4. Update: I finally figured out the puzzle. How could I forget about... Tiger Woods LOL

Well I sure hope they can overlook the written test! and remember my enthusiasm and excitement. I am hoping to at least get partial puzzles. Although I know there is about a 6% chance in even getting on the show, the idea is so exciting! I appreciate everyone's support!

I remember just as they gave us the written test, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and centered myself. Don't worry about how others are doing on it. Just nail the ones that come to you automatically. The rest, you can work on. Don't look at the clock either. Also, these practice tests that people are posting are harder than the actual written test.
GOOD LUCK!

Don't worry too much about the test -- I believe I only got about half done, and several partials. The best advice I got was to go through and just fill in what came to me right away, going all the way to the bottom; then going back up and filling in the "ing" "the" "and" etc that make sense. Also remember that Proper Name doesn't always mean a person's name, it could be a team, I think "Dallas Cowbowys" was on mine!
Seriously, just be enthusiastic and engaged, and that is more than half the battle!

Thank you! I saw the posted practice ones and it threw me into a panic! I think I have hives from the worry! I handle stress well but anything with the word "test" freaks me out! Keep trying to remind myself to just be myself! And if I get it then I get it. The more I think about it though the more I really really want it! Thanks for the kind words and calming me down!

How do you all know how many you got right? I mean, I'm assuming I was right if I filled them in. And I did get my letter, but we weren't actually given a grade.

Typically, you know based on comparing with others who had the same test as you during the break afterwards. The first time I auditioned, I knew I got 14/16 because a couple of other guys who had the same test as me clarified the answers for a couple of puzzles that I filled in but was unsure on ("STONE PAT SAJAK" for "STAND PAT SAJAK" and "BILL CLEMMON" for "BILL CLINTON", although I could've sworn they didn't give us the first N on the latter). They usually don't tell you your exact score, but I did notice in the green room that they had everybody's graded tests and applications/photos from the auditions.
