The official explanation is that they announced Jim as the new announcer early in the summer and wanted to establish him. This is just good business, guys... And yet The Price is Right did not. They showed Johnny episodes with Rod only doing the replacement consolation prize plugs (most notable on Kennedy episodes). As for Wheel, they also showed some Charlie episodes from September/October with no changes (well, except for those women doing the plugs because, you know, Vanna wasn't available or something). They really had no ethical reason to dub Jim over the other guest announcers, and the whole act of doing so in the first place suggests that they thought the other guest announcers were so inferior their episodes couldn't be shown again unless said announcers were not present. (And some of those episodes were dubbed over Charlie, making for three people doing the exact same work.) it's the same reason Price had exclusively non-guest-announcer George Gray reruns this summer and when had to do a make-good on a Steve White show, had one week of all Steve White to make it seem like a guest announcer week. George became the announcer on #5455K (February 25, 2011). The rerun schedule included a good many episodes from before then, including some with the other announcers...minus JD Roberto.

Did they ever use periods on the trilon board? I know there were a few episodes from the early-mid 1990s where they didn't, but I was wondering if they did later on.

I can't be 100% sure, but I don't believe so. In all the episodes I've seen that I can recall had DR, MR, MS, etc., I don't believe there was ever a period until a few years after the electronic board debuted.

After the puzzle board gained a fourth row but before the show moved to Sony, was there any pattern (which I define here as anything not random—pardon my poor phrasing) as to what color the wall behind the puzzle board was? I remember seeing pink, light blue, and purple on the show itself and yellow on a video game version, but that's not a detail I ever paid much attention to beyond a passing observation.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it just depended on the set. Like how they used blue during the start of the Big Month Bonanza of Cash and pink during the Season 10 premiere week. Concerning the other episodes, there doesn't appear to have been any kind of pattern regarding the set wall color. The show has also used red and orange.

I really like TPH's idea of a general questions thread, and I know this is old, but I moved all general Wheel questions and answers here, plus stickied it. From now on, any straightforward questions go here.
And here's a new question from me: When did they start pre-setting the Wheel at the start of the SHOW, not just a round? I'm pretty sure they did it with the 2500 in Season 25, then the MDW in Season 26, then Free Play for all the Las Vegas shows in Season 27, then 2500 ever since, but when did they start doing this?

I have another question. Someone put on my timeline that there were three Gift Tags when they debuted in March 2000. However, the only one I see in September 2000 is on the red $900. Where were the other two? Or did they actually start with just the one?

Well, the Season Changes on the timeline say that there was only one starting in Season 18 (September 2000). It's possible that when they debuted in Season 17 (March-July 2000) there were 3 and then it was reduced in between seasons.
However, I have been unable to find any episode footage at all for the year 2000 before September in order to confirm or debunk this. It seems to be a "dark period" in terms of video recordings in general, since both of the resource sites I use to date my retro recaps have no entries for 2000 (until September). I can't provide any personal info either, because this time frame falls into the gap where I had no Wheel access at all.
Unless somebody else has firsthand footage or recollections, this may remain an unanswered question for a long time to come.

Anyone know where in San Diego the June 1997 episodes were taped?

I was thinking about this just today, for some reason. I remember that several years ago, if a person won the bonus round, they would show a slow instant replay of Pat revealing what they won during the credits. When did that begin and end? I thought it was very neat, actually. I think it started in the 1997-98 season. Actually the first time I noticed it was April 24, 1996, the day of the PISTACHIO incident. Also, did a 3-day champ retire at the end of season 13? I would imagine so, since I can't picture the show simply saying to a 1 or 2-day champ "We're doing a new format next season and we're not allowing you to attempt to complete your run as returning champion. If you can believe it, I can answer this question from memory. Yes, the June 7 champion was a first time champ, Janet Russo, and she reappeared on September 4, 1996, the Wednesday of the premiere week. There was no explanation of her having been on the show for some reason. But I remembered back then that she was the champ, and still do now. I was the one who posted that. It was from memory, and that memory could be wrong. Maybe it was always one ever since they debuted on March 20, 2000.

Does anyone remember if the Double Play was vulnerable to Bankrupt?

Out of all the episodes I've seen where DP was picked up, I don't think I've never seen anyone spin Bankrupt while having it.

Jon's game makes the assumption that DP is vulnerable to Bankrupt, like any other prize of the era. And I agree, while I haven't seen anyone hit Bankrupt with DP still in their control (unused), I have seen instances when a contestant hands in the DP and promptly hits Bankrupt.
WIKI ALERT: One of the episodes in my collection (March '96) has an instance where a contestant hands in a DP token and then wishes to buy a vowel. Pat immediately chides him, saying that he has to spin now that he's handed in the Double Play. I'll check again to see exactly when this occurred.

Up to the Season 26 version of the game, it was NOT vulnerable. It is in the newest versions.

Someone's dates are a little off or something — you listed something for March 8 that didn't correspond to an episode I found that claimed to be dated 3/8/96.

It's probably mine. March 14 is the WHEEL OF FORTUNE COOKIE episode: that much we know. I'll check again to be sure, but I believe the Double Play incident is from the same calendar week. If not, it's the week prior.

In the earliest episodes of the four-line trilon puzzle board, when a puzzle was solved, the left half of the border would have its lights chase counterclockwise while the right half chased clockwise. When did this switch to the other way around?

Huh, I never noticed that. The sequence was also used when the blank puzzle was shown and during the 1989-92 opening sequence. As far as I can tell, the reversed sequence (basically arcing into the top-center) was first used in January 1984. The original sequence (basically arcing out the top-center) was used occasionally until sometime between early January and February 13, 1987, when the reversed sequence became the normal one. Good question, and good eye! {EDIT 1/4/12: More research led me to this.}
