Season 39 Pre-emptions and Anomalies

Monday's Wheel was also pre-empted on WKRN Nashville for a local Titans special titled "TN Nation Playoff Fever", even though the Titans don't play until Saturday. Wheel was scheduled for 12:21 AM Central, but probably aired about 15 minutes later than that due to overrun from NFL on ABC.

This means WKRN pre-empted Wheel for two days in a row this week; The Mike Vrabel Show is still running on Tuesdays. The rest of the week, including Saturday when the Titans have a game, is fine, according to their website's schedule.

FRIDAY 1/21 (#S-7520)

Even though the Patriots are now out of the playoffs, WBZ in Boston is still pre-empting Friday Wheels with Patriots All Access, and it is now the half-hour version of the show, which means the other game show is back on the Friday schedule but Wheel is not.

SATURDAY 1/22 (#S-7315RR)

Today's Wheel rerun is pre-empted on all East Coast CBS's due to college basketball and NFL from 12:30-8:00 PM Eastern, also threatening 6:00 PM Mountain airings and KRQE's airing, as well as most FOX airings due to NFL from 7:30-11:00 ET.

Since FOX has no afternoon sports, some FOX's are airing Wheel in the afternoon today. WDAF Kansas City is airing it at 3:30 PM Central. Any overrun from NFL will cause KHON Hawaii's airing to get JIP'd or skipped following the 6:00 news.

CBS doesn't have as much room. WBZ Boston is not airing Wheel at all this weekend. WHP Harrisburg is airing the J! rerun Saturday at noon ET and Wheel on Sunday at noon. KYLX in Laredo, Texas, which only airs WOF Weekend, will air it Sunday morning at 7:30 AM CT, right before CBS Sunday Morning.


The original airing of this episode, being a Friday, was also pre-empted on WBZ, meaning yet another episode is pre-empted twice in Boston. It was also pre-empted on WBBH in Fort Myers (NBC) by a makeup of the previous day's J!; they aired this episode on Saturday evening that week in the regular time slot; tonight's airing is unaffected.

Forgot to mention this, but KHQ in Spokane, Washington (NBC) has a partnership with Gonzaga University and airs most of their basketball games, which usually pre-empt Wheel. When this happens, the affected Wheel episode usually airs the following weekday at 12:00 PM Pacific (so Friday episodes air on Monday). Most games run from 6-8 PM.

Assuming there were no cancelled games, here are all of the days KHQ pre-empted Wheel with a game on a weekday. They are only airing two more games for the rest of the season, both of which are on Saturdays.

Starting this Saturday, ABC will be airing NBA games in primetime, which moves West Coast airings of Wheel to primetime slots and potentially cuts some airings off if there's overrun. KABC will be airing Wheel at 9:00 PM PT on these days.

Today's rerun is pre-empted on at least two of the four Montana affiliates (KTVQ Billings and KTXF Butte) by a local COVID special and is not airing at all; the other two still have it listed, but programming on all four is usually the same.

Wheel may be pre-empted again today on WDAF Kansas City; they have Wheel listed at both the regular 6:30 PM CT as well as 3:30 AM.

Although not directly affected by PGA, KRQE Albuquerque is pre-empting Wheel for a delayed airing of CBS Dream Team E/I program All In with Laila Ali, which was pre-empted in the morning by college basketball. Wheel will air at 1:37 AM Mountain, but won't be in danger of getting JIP'd if PGA runs long.


Regarding yesterday, the early airing did happen (Take that, CBSMV!), and PGA ended on time.

Wheel is pre-empted again on all East Coast CBS's today by the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open. Not as many stations will be making up this airing, since WOF Weekend is a different run and never first-run (except that one day in 2016). Air times on CBS stations actually airing Wheel this weekend are as follows:

Pre-emptions for "The Olympic Zone" begin today on some NBC affiliates (mainly the O&O's), but most won't start that until Saturday or Monday. The West Coast will be impacted starting today.

The opening ceremonies do not impact any East Coast airings of Wheel this year. Last year, they started at 7:30 ET, but most years, including today, they start at 8:00.

I haven't done the research yet, but what I know so far is that Wheel moves to Cozi TV in San Diego (KNSD's subchannel) starting tonight and all weeknights for the Olympics with no Saturday reruns, and WTHR in Indianapolis is starting pre-emptions on Saturday, with both game shows airing on WALV (MeTV, WTHR's .3 sub) Mon-Sat at their normal times. Like last year, WTHR is adding additional local Olympics specials at 7:00 ET to pre-empt the full hour.

Thursday’s Wheel was partially pre-empted on WHIO in Dayton, Ohio (CBS) due to severe weather. Wheel was on by Round 3.

It was also briefly interrupted on WKYT in Lexington (CBS) around 7:16, but the majority of the show aired.
