#14 BIKE (Season 1) Duke's ID: PRIZE-BIKE-S1 Like the prior wedge, BIKE wedge appearances were fairly infrequent, but perennial through the run of lime-green prize wedges, with it showing up in every season for which I have a substantial amount of information. I show a total of 27 appearances for BIKE wedges, with 11 appearances being of this variant. My first recorded appearance of this variant is in [S1-E25 Harriette/Christine/Susie 10/21/1983], and my last recorded appearance is in [S3-E510 Bonnie/Bert/Carol 2/28/1986]. Season 6 definitely saw a new BIKE variant introduced, replacing this one. Almost always, the BIKE wedge was used to represent a motorcycle being given away. I'll go ahead and pedal this BIKE wedge over to my wheel.

Where did you find this unique specimen of prize wedge?
Someone on the Classic WOF Facebook group was talking about it a while back. I don't know if it was true, or a Mandela effect.

seeing the sides with the glittery effect could give credence to it being Mandela'd (as it would seem more in place with Wheel 2000 than the shopping era of the regular show

Well, if you thought that I was too busy preparing the STL file release to do any Prize Wedge Hunting this weekend, you'd be incorrect. I have two more Prize Wedges done this morning. #15: JADE (Season 1, Variant A) Duke's ID: PRIZE-JADE-S1-A JADE was an infrequently seen wheel prize, appearing a known total of 13 times, with this particular variant accounting for 8 of those appearances. First known to appear in [S1-E37 Jenea/Kevin/Lucy 11/8/1983], JADE reached peak popularity in Season 2. This particular variant did not seem to survive past Season 2, with its last known appearance being [S2-E304 Joyce/Nancy/Mark 2/8/1985]. A Season 2 and Season 4 variant were seen after that, but there is no known appearance of the JADE wedge after Season 4. This wedge was, quite predictably, paired with any item made from JADE. Let's talk about that J for a moment. That is most definitely not a Clarendon J, which should have a ball on the hook end. This J doesn't seem to come from any pre-digital font that I can identify. I highly suspect it may have been created ad-hoc, maybe by splicing a serif from another letter. My wife and I have taken to calling it "Franken-J". We'll see that J again in the future. "...It's... Alive!" Franken-JADE is now on the wheel.

#16 CRYSTAL (Season 1) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CRYSTAL-S1 CRYSTAL is another Prize Wedge that I would unofficially classify as uncommon but perennial, with at least 29 appearances across 12 seasons. This particular variant accounts for at least 6 of those, with a seventh strongly suspected but unconfirmed. Currently, the earliest appearance is [S1-E72 Paul/Marilyn/Linda 1/3/1984], and this variant seems to have been used consistently into Season 4, with a last known appearance in [S4-E767 Paula/Miriam/Jim 5/15/1987]. When record of the CRYSTAL wedge next surfaces in Season 6, a new variant is used. Early on, CRYSTAL was often used for crystal stemware, vases, and bowls. At one point a pair of crystal model cars were offered. In Season 10, it seems like someone in Prize Coordination really took a liking to Lalique crystal. The frequency of CRYSTAL Prize Wedges increased noticeably, and almost every time from that point forward, the prize offered for CRYSTAL was a Lalique piece. Again, some of these letters are definitely not Clarendon. It appears the people responsible for the prize wedges are mixing and matching fonts at this point. The C and the S at the very least are leaning much more Bookman than Clarendon. We'll be seeing more of the Bookmanish-Clarendon mix in some of the other earlier wedges. By now you probably don't need a CRYSTAL ball to know that this wedge is going on my wheel.

#17: JADE (Season 1, Variant B) Duke's ID: PRIZE-JADE-S1-B Today I have a very rare prize wedge variant to feature. In fact, it's so rare that I've only spotted it in one episode. There was a second variant of the JADE wedge in Season 1. It was used in [S1-E89 Linda/Phil/Carole 1/26/1984] and seemingly at no other time before or since. It looks hurriedly made to me, and the signs of that are the uneven lettering, the lack of whitespace balance, and the presence of the ball on the end of the Clarendon J when seemingly someone on staff often took issue with that particular typographical feature on a regular. Did they misplace the first JADE wedge variant that night and hustle to make a replacement? Or is there some other explanation for this irregularity? It was used for a Quan Yin figure made of Jade, worth $2,100 at the time. Well I can't carve a wedge from JADE but I can make one from cardstock and vinyl and put it on the wheel.

#18 Stereo (Season 1) Duke's ID: PRIZE-STEREO-S1 STEREO was uncommonly used, and was limited to mostly the first four seasons. This variant accounted for all 6 appearances known to me in Seasons 1 thru 4, first appearing in [S1-E97 Frances/Elaine/Duane 2/7/1984] and last appearing in [S4-E644 Pete/Stephanie/Esther 11/28/1986]. New variants briefly popped up in the Daytime CBS run and then in Season 12, but both were short-lived and at present I only know of each of them being used once. The STEREO wedge was used to give away stereos, as one would expect. This is another prize that over time probably started falling uncomfortably close to or below the minimum budget for prizes. This would account for its brief re-introduction as a new variant in the daytime CBS run, where the prize budget was much lower than in syndication. Also, the increasing popularity of surround sound systems would render "stereo" systems obsolete. Notice how the text is keystoned. We will see a few wedges with keystoned text like that. Maybe later we'll put some music on the old-timey STEREO, but for now, I'll put STEREO on the wheel.

#19: CHINA (Season 1) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CHINA-S1 CHINA made a fairly regular appearance on the wheel, with 43 recorded usages through the first 12 seasons plus daytime. This particular CHINA variant made an appearance in Season 1 with [S1-E105 Leanne/David/Becky 2/17/1984], but then really shone with no fewer than 8 appearances in season 2. It was last seen in [S2-E333 Carol/Susan/Beverly 3/27/1985], when CHINA seemed to take a multi-season hiatus from the wheel, with a new variant eventually returning in Season 6. Until season 10, CHINA wedges were used exclusively to represent dinnerware. Up until then, any trip to China used a TRIP wedge. From Season 10 on, CHINA was alternately used for both dinnerware and trips to CHINA. This would cause confusion at least once in [S12-E2218 John/Erica/Marianne 12/14/1994], leading to this befuddlement from Pat: "China. China? That would be China like eating type, right? Ah, we don't know. Probably. A plate, yeah that's... Oh, a trip! It is a trip. Ok, Ch- well, I don't know! I'm just trying to find out here..." I'll go ahead and put CHINA on the wheel, but I'll leave it to your imagination as to whether it represents Ceralene Raynaud Limoge chinaware service for eight, or a trip to Beijing. Or maybe we'll just leave Pat guessing.

#20 VASES (Season 1) Duke's ID: PRIZE-VASES-S1 VASES in plural in the wheel were a rare treat, and is only known to have occurred 3 times, once in Season 1 with [S1-E153 Bill/Jude/MaryAnn 5/2/1984], and twice in Season 2, with the last appearance being [S2-E342 Carolyn/Scott/Mawnna 4/9/1985] As expected, VASES was used to give away a pair of vases. At one point later in Season 6, a pair of vases was offered again, but that time an ART wedge was used. If anyone puts any VASES on my wheel, they better not have any water in them or I'll have words that shouldn't be put on a prize wedge.

Season 1 Wrap-up
That wraps up Season 1 of Vintage Prize Wedge Hunter. These twenty wedges are all of the prize wedges that I have observed to be present in Season 1. That doesn't mean there can't be more, as only about a fourth of all Season 1 episodes are accounted for so far. There are still plenty more prize wedges to hunt in upcoming seasons! In Season 2, we will cover 29 new prize wedges, and even that won't bring us anywhere near the over 600 prize wedge variants that I have spotted through Season 12.

#21: GRAPHIC (Season 2, Variant A) Duke's ID: PRIZE-GRAPHIC-S2-A I'm back already for Season 2 of Prize Wedge Hunter - Vintage Edition, and we have a lot of exciting prize wedges to cover for Season 2, from a mysterious and rarely seen BOX to more variants for favorite wedges. Let's get started. I'll start out season 2 with a variant that seemed to appeare in exactly one episode. Overall GRAPHIC seems to have been used only twice, both times being in Season 2. However, each time a unique variant was used. This variant was used in [S2-E202 10/24/1984 Joan/Scott/Sharon]. Both times that GRAPHIC was used, it was to offer the same prize: A limited-edition serigraph of Aquarium by Hiro Yamagata. It's interesting but not unthinkable that the prize appreciated over 65% in value in the less than 4 months between the two times it was offered. Later, serigraphs would generally fall under the purview of the ART wedge. From a design perspective this wedge provokes questions. Why did this wedge not follow the styling of other wedges being created at the time? Why is the lettering so unnecessarily small and lightweight? Honestly, I had a little trouble wrangling this one, especially with some of those smaller, dainty letters at the bottom. If a cleaner video source appears, that would greatly help me make a higher fidelity vector. Nonetheless, let me show the GRAPHIC of me putting this new wedge on my wheel.

#22 VASE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-VASE-S2 This is another wedge variant that has only been spotted once, in [S2-E204 9/20/1984 Debbie/Suzanne/Dan]. A different VASE variant later makes an appearance in the Daytime Goen era. VASE was used, predictably, to give away a singular vase. This wedge looks suspiciously similar to VASES-S1, but with the S removed. Maybe they were made at the same time, from the same tracing, otherwise it would be very hard for them to be that consistent with eachother given the tech available at the time. I don't think VASES-S1 was altered to make VASE-S2, because VASES-S1 appears intact later in Season 2. Let me quickly put this on my wheel while Pat and Jack debate the proper pronunciation of VASE.

#23: HEART (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-HEART-S2 This particular variant seems to have been used once, in [S2-E206 Charmaine/Debbie/Janice 9/24/1984], though different HEART wedges would return in seasons 6, 7 and 10 for a total of nine known appearances. "Feels a bit creepy," says my wife. Remembering that it is a family show, though, I will point out that the on-brand use of the HEART wedge was to offer some kind of heart-shaped jewelry, often a very expensive piece of heart-shaped jewelry. It had nothing to do with organs, and indeed, the ORGAN wedge would not appear until later. It only takes a couple beats of the HEART to put this wedge on the wheel.

#24 PIN (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-PIN-S2 This would be the second variant of the often-used PIN wedge. It seems to have been exclusive to Season 2, with a first known appearance in [S2-E207 Terry/Mitch/Georgia 9/25/1984], and a last known appearance in [S2-E307 Pat/Mike/Tammie 3/8/1985]. I have record of six total appearances for this variant. Overall the text is a bit narrower and taller than its Season 1 predecessor, filling a bit more of the wedge. We'll put a PIN in this prize wedge until we see a series of new PIN variants starting in Season 4, meanwhile let's get this one situated on the wheel.

#25: CRUISE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CRUISE-S2 CRUISE Wedges were a significant heavyweight addition to the goodie arsenal, being used at least 62 times by the end of Season 13. The original Season 2 variant of CRUISE was first seen in [S2-E210 Lauraine/Nancy/Reggie 9/28/1984], and it had a long life, lasting late into Season 5 with a last known appearance in [S5-E899 Sandy/Dave/Mimi 3/3/1988]. In Season 6, new CRUISE wedges would take over duties. It's worth noting that a couple of the letters on this variant are not Clarendon. The C once again come from some font resembling Bookman. The R is also missing its distinctive curved tail and thus more resembles a Bookman R. You can probably guess that the CRUISE wedge was used to give away cruise vacations. Let me CRUISE on over to the wheel and make it ship shape with this new wedge.

#26 LUGGAGE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-LUGGAGE-S2 The LUGGAGE wedge did not really seem to catch on. There are a total of 3 instances recorded of a LUGGAGE wedge being used, with this variant accounting for two of them. This variant was first used toward the beginning of Season 2 in [S2-E215 Bill/Brilla/Teddy 10/5/1984], and then it was seen once more in [S2-E379 Denise/Rob/Mary 6/6/1985]. A new variant of LUGGAGE was not seen until Season 13 sporting the updated neon green color contemporary to that era. Is this wedge text actually in Clarendon or not? I think it is a fair question, as the three G's and the E are all missing Clarendon features. The top of the G resembles the Bookmanish C being used during this time, but the bottom of the G looks nothing like even Bookman. I really think there is another pre-digital font at play here in some of these early wedges. The closest digital match I've found at this point is Claremont, so possibly it's an ancestor of that. Separately, the E looks like it had the serifs on its middle bar surgically removed. the L, U, and A do seem properly Clarendon, though. Predictably, this wedge was used to give away a set of luggage. Often, though, luggage would be made part of a TRIP or CRUISE or TRAVEL prize package, probably one reason we didn't see more of this wedge. Soon I'll need a set of LUGGAGE just to hold all of these prize wedges. Here is the new wedge on the wheel.

#27: SCULPTURE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-SCULPTURE-S2 The SCULPTURE wedge made a single known appearance in season 2, [S2-E233 Marianne/Rose/Mike 10/31/1984]. It immediately went on a 10-year hiatus, returning as a different variant at the very end of Season 12. The SCULPTUREs offered for this wedge vary greatly. For unknown reasons, sculptures were often given away under ART or CRYSTAL or other wedges instead in the Season 3 through Season 11 interval. Once again, we seem to have a Clarendon/Claremont mix for this wedge. After making a SCULPTURE of this wedge, I'm placing it on the wheel.

#28: JEWEL (Season 2, Variant A) Duke's ID: PRIZE-JEWEL-S2-A The JEWEL wedge is another very common wedge that was introduced in Season 2. There were at least 40 appearances between seasons 2 and 8, including four from daytime episodes during that timespan. This variant seems to have been used only once, in [S2-E237 Verna Dean/Steve/Sharon 11/9/1984]. The typography on this wedge is very unusual. I'm not even sure it's a proper font, it might have been hand-designed. The JEWEL wedge was used to give away various pieces of jewelry aside from rings. Often the jewelry piece featured was representative of what could be bought with a gift certificate offered as the actual prize. A JEWEL this beautiful definitely belongs on the wheel.

One thing to note about the "Sculpture" wedge, is that it's the only prize wedge during the shopping era to have a 9-letter prize name imprinted. Nevertheless, great job on these wedges. Made like authentic.
