#52: FUR (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-FUR-S3 This third FUR wedge variant was short-lived, making a single known appearance in [S3-E493 Judith/Elizabeth/Blue 2/18/1986]. Typographically, this wedge is very similar to PRIZE-FUR-S1-B, though the R is a bit bolder and styled slightly differently. What makes this wedge stand out from its predecessor is the ill fit of the wedge for the wheel, in the same way that the preceding TRUCK wedge was ill-fit. Why one of these ill-fitting wedges survived yet another did not is a curious question. (Again, I chose not to model the wedge size difference, as having prize wedges of different sizes in my game would drive me bonkers.) FUR sure we are going to put this wedge on the wheel!

#53: SILVER (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-SILVER-S3 This second SILVER wedge variant had 5 known appearances between mid-Season 3 and Season 5. It likely had more appearances, but again, information for this era is spotty. It is first seen in [S3-E495 Janet/Nina/Rich 2/5/1986], and last seen in [S5-E801 Rhonda/Patt/Jay 10/12/1987] Overall the text on this wedge variant is larger and has much more presence than its Season 1 predecessor. Here's some SILVER for the wheel, just in case that $5,000 space doesn't provide enough silver.

#54: EARCLIPS (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-EARCLIPS-S3 EARCLIPS was a specialized jewelry wedge that was unsurprisingly used for a set of earclips, usually themselves proxy for a gift certificate. This particular variant only has one known appearance, [S3-E501 Pam/Dolores/Allan 2/17/1986]. Overall, there are 6 known appearances of all EARCLIPS wedge variants, though after this first appearance, the next variant was not seen until Season 7. Rumor has it that some of the letters on this wedge variant, particularly the E, R, L, and P, were conceived after the artist adopted a new Dachshund. Let's eclipse the $150 wedge once again with this fabulous EARCLIPS prize wedge.

#55: WATCH (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-WATCH-S3 This variant of the WATCH wedge was used at least six times over Seasons 3 and 4. Possibly it was used in Season 5, though in Season 6 at the latest there would be a new variant that would completely replace this one. This variant was first seen in [S3-E517 Dick/Diane/Betty 3/14/1986] and was last seen in [S4-E774 Irene/Ingrid/Jerry 6/19/1987]. The text for this wedge much more fully occupies the wedge than the Season 1 variant - it is much larger and wider, and is in line with the styling of other recent wedges. Just WATCH me go ahead and put this new wedge on the wheel.

#56: TRIP (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-TRIP-S3 This TRIP wedge variant completely replaced both TRIP wedge variants that were used over season 1 and 2. This variant was used at least 15 times over Seasons 3, 4, and 5. My first record of its use is [S3-E524 Linda/Joan/Tom 3/19/1986], and then the last time it was seen was [S5-E809 Mary Beth/Donna/Robin 10/22/1987], after which it was replaced by the first of two Season 5 variants. The text on this wedge is extra, extra bold, helping it to stand out from other TRIP wedge variants. Which is good because there are a LOT of TRIP wedge variants yet to come. It's curious that they suddenly departed from the recent wedge styling with the extra bold rather than extra wide letters. It's time to take another TRIP over to the wheel to put this wedge on.

#57: GEM (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-GEM-S3 Even though loose gemstones seem totally on-brand with wheel prize offerings from this era, GEM seemed to be a single-use prize wedge. The only usage I have listed for this prize wedge is [S3-E534 Darryl/Beth/Janet 4/1/1986], when it was used to offer a set of three gemstones: "A collector's set of high quality gem stones. A sealed set of three different cuts, carats, and colors with its own certification of authenticity, and beautiful teakwood keepsake box. It's $1,215!" Let's go ahead and put this GEM of a wedge on the wheel.

#58: BRACELET (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-BRACELET-S3 BRACELET, another 8-letter prize wedge, was used at least 6 times over seasons 3 thru 12, though this variant was only seen once in [S3-E537 Brad/Cornelia/Pam 4/15/1986]. The next time a BRACELET wedge would be seen is in season 6 with a new variant. BRACELET joins a growing variety of prize wedges descibing individual pieces of jewelry. If you guessed that it was used to give away bracelets, well, that would be both obvious and correct. Again, we seem to be getting a bit of Dachsund DNA mixed in with our Clarendon, with these really wide letters. BRACELET yourself, this wedge is going on the wheel.

#59: ART (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-ART-S3 ART became a rather popular wedge, with 64 observed appearances between Season 3 and Season 14. This first variant was used at least five times between Season 3 and Season 5, first seen in [S3-E539 Nick/Toots/Don 4/17/1986] and then last seen in [S5-E822 Norm/Diane/Linda 11/10/1987]. After Season 5 it was replaced by a rapid-fire series of five variants across Seasons 6 and 7. ART was used to represent a number of different artful objects. Serigraphs and Lithographs were common, though vases, sculptures, crystal, porcelain, and other sundry items were also offered under ART. Values ranged greatly from $550 (from the CBS daytime run) to $12,000. This wedge is kind of meta - it is a proxy for art, yet it is art itself. Thou ART to be witness as I put this wedge on the wheel. This concludes Season 3 of Vintage Prize Wedge Hunter. With Season 4 introducing the new color scheme that I call the Classic palette, and retiring the color scheme I call the Vintage palette, technically this is the last episode of Vintage Prize Wedge Hunter, and from the next episode forward it would be Classic Prize Wedge Hunter. It's all still avocado-colored prize wedges for a long time yet to come, and some of the vintage prize wedges made it a couple seasons into the Classic era, so it's all kinda interchangeable. So we'll just keep it all on this thread for convenience.

Welcome to Season 4 of Prize Wedge Hunter, where we start exploring a new Prize Wedge biome, the Classic era. The wheel palette makes a significant shift away from orange and brown toward pink and purple, fully lifting the show out of the '70's at last. Season 4 is going to be a short season. Even though I have sources for about 25% of the season, which is more than what I have for Season 3, there are fewer new prize wedges sighted. In fact, I could only find seven new wedges for Season 4. So, let's move ahead full-speed toward the next milestone, the start of the all-cash era. #60: FUR (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-FUR-S4 This is the FUR variant that replaced the short lived Season 3 variant, and the fourth FUR wedge variant overall. Used across Seasons 4 and 5, it was first observed in [S4-E616 Marsha/Ed/Kathleen 10/20/1986], and last observed in [S5-E839 Norm/Marci/Dean 12/3/1987], with 8 known appearances and a ninth probable appearance for which I do not have a video source. It was replaced in Season 6 with an evolving series of variants. Although variants FUR-S1-B, FUR-S3, and FUR-S4 are all very similar, there are some differences. This variant is actually quite difficult to distinguish from FUR-S1-B, with the primary difference being somewhat bolder text and slightly lower letter positioning on FUR-S4. When comparing FUR-S3 and FUR-S4, most of the difference is in where the text is positioned on the wedge, with FUR-S3 having the text positioned noticeably higher, and with FUR-S4 having a somewhat bolder R. Now that that hairy tangle of variants has been brushed out, let's put this FUR wedge on the wheel.

#61: PIN (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-PIN-S4 This PIN variant was spotted twice in Season 4. It appeared in [S4-E632 Lee/Becky/Peter 11/17/1986] and then once more in [S4-E661 May/Roseanne/Lou 12/19/1986]. Season 5 would see its own variant of the PIN wedge. The typography on this variant is VERY similar to the original PIN-S1 variant. However, this variant can be distinguished by its bolder text, especially noticeable through the size of the loop on the letter P. In the E661 appearance of this wedge variant, the prize was a dinosaur pin. Perfect for the well-heeled four-year-old or paleontologist in your life! Shh! Let's be quiet enough to hear a PIN drop on this wheel.

#62: GIFT CERT. (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-GIFT-CERT-S4 After having many prizes proxy a gift certificate, we suddenly have a wedge for an unproxied gift certificate. While there will be other wedges to come directly representing gift certificates, this is the only wedge variant with this particular text. Other gift certificate wedge examples are G.C., GIFT CERTIF., and GIFT CERTIFICATE in full. I only have record of a single use of this particular variant, in [S4-E642 Becky/Mike/Cathy 11/25/1986]. The gift certificate offered with this wedge variant was for Gucci: "One of our contestants could win a gift certificate to shop at Gucci's where they might select this stunning ensemble. It's a green Gaberdeen suit with a satin blouse, red leather shoes, and a bag. It's made in Italy, only from Gucci. $1,260!" This is the first prize wedge to have a punctuation mark on it, considering that the dollar sign used for the CASH wedge back in season 1 is not officially considered punctuation by most grammarists. It's a good thing that punctuation mark is there, otherwise we'd think they were trying to give away a single branded breath mint (a brand that I just now learned was discontinued 6 years ago!).
Also notable is the use of the fairly rare styling of having one word horizontally across the top of the wedge, with the second word arranged in the traditional vertical fashion below it.
Do we want that GIFT CERT. on the Wheel or On Account? On the Wheel of course!

#63: CAMERA (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CAMERA-S4 CAMERA seemed to be a low-use prize wedge. It has only been spotted in one episode, [S4-E643 Elise/Gerald/George 11/26/1986]. The wedge was used to give away a Ricoh 35mm camera: "One of our players could win Ricoh's KR-30SP 35mm camera outfit. It offers automatic features for clean, sharp pictures, with a zoom lens, flash, and auto-winder. It's from Ricoh. $1,200!" It's surprising that this wedge had so little use and had no further variants, since cameras were offered quite frequently as part of Goodie Prize packages. However, the subtlety was that the cameras were often given away as part of a trip package, or alternately with a TRAVEL wedge which tended to offer all of the trimmings of a trip except the trip itself. Let me get my CAMERA and take a picture of this wedge on the wheel.

#64: TV PHONE (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-TV-PHONE-S4 TV PHONE seemed to be another single use or low use prize wedge. It has been seen solely in [S4-E651 Jeff/Ruth/Debbie 11/13/1986]. This is a really exciting one: Decades before Zoom, Skype, iPhone, and Android, and years before the public internet, there was Luma. It was truly before its time in its vision. We're talking Knight Rider level tech here, folks: "It's Luma, the first visual telephone for everyday calling! Using an ordinary telephone line, the Luma sends a video snapshot of its user anywhere in the world. It's from Luma Telecom. $2,900!"
It's a shame, though, that the Luma seemed to only send still photos. Perhaps it was a bit of an oversell to describe it as a "Video Telephone" in marketing materials. KITT is not impressed after all. Nevertheless, this was another wedge to use the special horizontal-vertical split formatting, with "TV" featured horizontally across the top, and "PHONE" featured vertically down the remaining length of the wedge. Perhaps I should take a snapshot of this wedge using an old-tech TV PHONE. It wouldn't be in color, though.

#65: JADE (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-JADE-S4 This fourth JADE variant has only been spotted in one episode, [S4-E703 Linda/Dave/Leonid 2/25/1987]. This is actually the last time that JADE was seen as a prize wedge. Note the similarities with JADE-S1-A and JADE-S2. The only real difference is that the J on this variant is actually a full and proper Clarendon-style J, instead of being some kind of Franken-J. The one time that we saw this variant, it was used to offer a phoenix bird incense burner: "This is hand-carved in China. This breathtakingly beautiful jade incense burner, it's decorated with a phoenix bird, significant in oriental mythology and symbolic of the constant rejuvenation of life. It's $2,250!" Let's rejuvenate the wheel with this final JADE wedge:

#66: FESTIVAL (Season 4) Duke's ID: PRIZE-FESTIVAL-S4 FESTIVAL has been seen a total of three times. This particular variant has only been seen in [S4-E777 Joy/Elena/Ira 6/16/1987]. In Season 7 we will see two appearances of a second and final FESTIVAL wedge variant. This wedge variant offered a trip to the Laguna Beach Art Festival: "One of our players could be off to the famous Laguna Beach Art Festival. They'll have VIP seats at the critically acclaimed Pageant of the Masters. It's a blend of art, entertainment, and music. And they'll also receive a $1,000 gift certificate so they can enjoy shopping on the festival grounds, and add up to their own art collection. This retail value is $1,680!" Let's add up to my own wedge art collection by putting this FESTIVAL on the wheel:
This concludes Season 4 of Prize Wedge Hunter. Next time, we'll be back with the first of many Season 5 wedges as we approach the end of the shopping era!
