It seems that the lettering on these wedges were made by hand back in the day. True?

I can't even begin to tell you how fun it is seeing all the kinds of fonts used on these old Prize wedges. I take it that's why you like making recreations of them, do you not, duke ?
I love seeing both the variety of wedge artwork, and the variety of prizes themselves. Seasons 1-15ish had some really sublime prize coordination going on, and so it's important to me to have the wedge vocabulary to be able to bring that level of prize design to my home games.
The wheel prizes are the one thing about the wheel that's different every game, creating a built-in moment of anticipation followed by satisfaction in the game just in the prize plug and wedge themselves, even if no one wins the prize. Every one wins just a little bit inside, just by the presence of that avocado-colored wedge, the sometimes-dubious typography emblazoned thereon, and the plug to frame them both.
This phenomenon was confirmed in my recent tournament. By the time the third prize went onto the wheel for round 2 of game 2, a hush would fall over the room when I put a prize wedge on the wheel. Then when I played the prize plug, the mood quickly became exuberant. It was in that moment that I truly knew why I became a Prize Wedge Hunter.
I hope that one day Wheel returns to the daily variety of prizes that we used to see in those early seasons, instead of relying so heavily on trips and cars and cash. While I haven't watched much of it, by contrast I really love the prize coordination I've seen in the more modern PYL episodes - they really get it over there, and the producers of our favorite game show could take a few notes.

It seems that the lettering on these wedges were made by hand back in the day. True? My best guess based on art classes from long ago is they would have been made using an opaque projector - They would have a reference sheet with the font, and would use the opaque projector to trace the design onto vinyl or whatever stock they used, and then cut with an Exacto knife. Then they would lay it all out onto a transfer tape to make sure the letters stayed straight, and then finally like a modern transfer, transferred it onto the wedge.
This is how they would have been able to achieve the keystone/trapezoid effect used for some of the lettering so easily - with an opaque projector it's just a matter of tilting your reference source.
Today we have vinyl cutting machines to do all of the hard work for us.

It's possible they may have used such a method, but by 1988, the font was straight-up Clarendon, which implies they may have improved how the letters were printed, possibly with computers as computers were becoming more and more common by then. Although the font was far less diverse, the Prizes themselves were still far from that. For example, the Bob Goen era had some really unique and crazy stuff like New Man and Macho Man packages. Another example of such a Prize wedge is one marked "Collect" that was used possibly during Season 12 if not just a bit earlier. I actually bought that off of eBay back in late 2014. Although I've yet to see the episode it was featured in and thus don't know exactly what it was for, it could've been for some sort of collection. Speaking of which, by late 1996, the Prizes offered via these special wedges began to become less diverse. For instance, they didn't offer stuff like collectables, artwork, sculptures, or historic documents anywhere as much. They seemed to be shifting more towards more trips, jewelry, furniture, and modern amenities such as home electronics and V.I.P. packages. Nowadays, it's extremely rare when something other than trips are offered via these wedges, and to add to that it's news when these trips involve cruises.

Agreed, by around season 6 or 7 they seemed to have some more automated means of making transfers for prize wedges. There are several examples of variants starting around then that only differ in where the text is positioned on the wedge, or are clearly a revision of a prior design with some edits. I'm sure CNC machines were used for vinyl cutting on an industrial/commercial level long before brands like Cricut hit the consumer scene.

#39: CLOCK (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CLOCK-S2 CLOCK was used occasionally as a prize offering from Season 2 through Season 10. It has 17 currently known appearances, with four of those being this particular variant. This variant first appeared in [S2-E302 Kathy/Marty/Molly 2/12/1985], and was last seen in [S5-E937 Conrad/Erica/Verna 5/3/1988]. Just two episodes later, its replacement was seen. Originally, CLOCK was used to represent a smaller clock in the sub-$1,000 range. However, this wedge soon got upgraded in power, representing grandfather clocks and other clocks worth thousands of dollars. Of course, Daytime would reprise the cheaper clock, at least once that we know of. The CLOCK says it's time to put something on the wheel.

#40: CYCLE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CYCLE-S2 CYCLE was seemingly used just once as a prize wedge, in [S2-E313 Kathy Jo/Tom/Beth 2/27/1985]. The really odd thing is, this wedge was not even used to represent a motorcycle. It was used to offer an ATV. Motorcycles frequently were offered under the BIKE wedge instead. The text on this wedge shows the use of keystoning, especially visible in the L and E. Let me just roll up the CYCLE onto the wheel.

#41: CARVING (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CARVING-S2 CARVING appears to have been a single-use prize wedge, featured in [S2-E328 Gene/Debi/Barry 3/20/1985]. It's styling is similar to other wedges from this era, with extra-wide letters and typographical features from both Clarendon and Claremont. The prize offered with this wedge was a hand-carved rose quartz covered vase, whatever that is. Even looking at it, I'm not quite sure. It's worth quite a bit, though. I'll be CARVING out a path now to go put this on the wheel.

#42: HORSE (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-HORSE-S2 HORSE seemed to be another single-use prize wedge, being offered in [S2-E336 Susan/Beth/Ted 4/3/1985]. The font on this wedge seems to be less extended in width than other more recent wedges. The prize offered with this wedge was, to my mild disappointment, not a real horse, but an alabaster horse finished in gold and silver leaf. It was a fairly rare sub-$1000 prize, of which only 19 were known to be offered in syndication. Let's go see a wedge about a HORSE and put it on the wheel.

#43: BOWL (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-BOWL-S2 It can be confirmed that BOWL is NOT a single-use prize wedge. It seems to have been used twice before being packed off to the Land of Misfit Prize Wedges. This wedge was first used in [S2-E339 Ted/Greg/Karen 4/4/1985], and then a week later in [S2-E344 Karen/Curt/Sally 4/11/1985], then it was not seen again. Both times this wedge was used, it was used to offer an ornate bowl of Chinese origin - first a hand-carved serpentine bowl, then a Cloisonne gold-trimmed bowl. Both were around the $1,000 mark. I'm going to put this on my wheel and then go have a BOWL of cereal.

#44: BOX (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-BOX-S2 This is the super-mysterious, very rare BOX wedge. As you might expect from it being called rare, it has been seen in only one episode, [S2-E350 Lu Ann/Rich/Sharon 4/19/1985]. However, what makes this wedge super-mysterious is that we don't actually know what prize was being offered, even though it was won! The video source currently in circulation for this episode is partial, and comes in in-progress in round 2 with the BOX wedge already on Sharon's podium during Rich's turn. Sharon's turn comes around and she solves for $1,050. This brings her total to $3,400, but we don't know how much of that is from her mentioned Round 1 win, and how much is from the BOX. What is the BOX??? One guess would be the same Sterling Silver box offered under the SILVER wedge at other times in the season (the one that is "Eye-arresting, contemporary, tactile, rock motif") but the math on that does not work out - that box was worth $1,975, which would require a round 1 total of $375, which would not be likely with no DV wedges ending in 5. The only way I can think of that it could happen is if she had put $25 on account and then lost it to a Bankrupt early in Round 2. It could also be the $2,000 box with the French floral pattern. The math works out better for that, putting Sharon's round 1 winnings at a more attainable $350. We won't know for sure until a better video source surfaces, though. Capturing this wedge was kind of tricky - with no actual shot of it on the wheel, I could choose between a shot of it on the podium or a shot of Pat holding it up at the end of the round before unceremoniously dropping it to the floor on its short edge. That drop might explain why we never see this wedge again. The mystery BOX is now on the wheel, whatever type of box it might be!

#45: SKI (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-SKI-S2 Next we have another seemingly single-use prize wedge variant. SKI was used in [S2-E354 Diane/Linda/Ronda 5/2/1985], but then was not used again until Season 6 when a new variant was introduced. Starting in Season 9, we start seeing many offshoot wedges: SKI TRIP, SKI COLORADO, SKIING, SKIS, SKI BIG BEAR (my personal favorite), and SKI WEAR. Just plain SKI was last seen in Season 12, with a total of 7 known appearances. In the season 2 offering, the prize was a Kawasaki Jet Ski. With the later season variants, the prizes were related to snow skiing. I don't SKI, so I'm going to walk over instead and put this wedge on the wheel.

#46: MUSIC (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-MUSIC-S2 This variant of the MUSIC wedge also seems to have seen only a single use, in [S2-E357 Kim/Brad/Carla 5/7/1985]. the MUSIC wedge would not make a return until Season 6, with a new variant. Overall, there are 15 other known appearances of different music wedge variants, spanning from Season 6 to Season 12, including two known appearances in Daytime episodes. The prize offerings for the MUSIC wedge were fairly varied. keyboards, jukeboxes, music festival trips, gift certificates, really expensive music boxes, stereo systems, and pianos were all fair game, even though many of these had their own wedges available. It's time to face the MUSIC and put this wedge on the wheel.

#47: JEWEL (Season 2, Variant B) Duke's ID: PRIZE-JEWEL-S2-B This JEWEL variant saw a little bit of mileage between Seasons 2 and 5. It completely replaced its off-brand-fonted predecessor, first known to appear in [S2-E358 Karen/Clare/Scott 5/8/1985], and last known to appear in [S5-E782 Sandy/Mark/Jim 9/29/1987] with a total of 6 known appearances. After that it was replaced with a Season 5 variant. The typography on this wedge is keystoned, like some of the other early prize wedges. There seems to be a lot of unevenness between the various elements, making me think that this wedge might also be in part hand-drawn. At any rate this is a real JEWEL of a wedge to put on the wheel.

#48: BOAT (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-BOAT-S2 Though it first appeared in Season 2, BOAT became more popular in seasons 6 and 7. BOAT has a total of 26 known appearances, with the three earliest appearances being of this particular variant. This variant first appeared in [S2-E361 Gina/Cindy/Mike 5/13/1985] late in Season 2. It was seen once again in Season 4, and then finally in Season 5 with [S5-E796 John/Nancy/Peter 10/5/1987]. It was replaced by a new variant in Season 6. A fairly wide variety of boats were offered using the BOAT wedge: Sailboats, motor boats, hovercraft, jet boats, and sometimes even personal watercraft. I make sure to keep my wheel well away from water, but since it's dry it won't hurt to put this BOAT on the wheel.

#49: CAR (Season 2) Duke's ID: PRIZE-CAR-S2 CAR was a fairly popular prize wedge, appearing at least 27 times between Season 2 and Season 10. After Season 10 cars did not seem to be offered directly via prize wedge, but would find their way back onto the wheel through other means. This particular CAR wedge variant saw a bit of mileage, with 9 known usages between Seasons 2 and 5. It was first seen toward the end of Season 2 in [S2-E368 Carol/Darrell/Debbie 5/22/1985]. It was especially prolific during Season 4, and then it was last seen in [S5-E825 Jean/Kathy/John 11/13/1987], after which it was replaced with a Season 5 variant. CARs were one of the most valuable prizes offered through a prize wedge. Indeed, through Season 15, the top three known prizes by value were all CAR, and five of the top ten known prizes by value were CAR. The record-holder for top-value prize offered via these Prize Wedges is the $31,211 Cadillac Seville offered in [S4-E655 Michelle/Debbie/Harvey 11/21/1986]. It's a good thing my wheel is nice and sturdy and has good suspension, since now it has to hold a CAR. This wraps up all known Season 2 prize wedges! There are still dozens of episodes MIA for Season 2, and given the number of single-use wedges we saw in this season, I'd be almost certain that there are a couple of other mysterious uncatalogued wedges out there. Maybe they will reveal themselves in time, but for now it's time to move on to Season 3!

Welcome to the start of Season 3 of Vintage Prize Wedge Hunter. This season is going to seem really short compared to the last one, since most episodes are MIA. Indeed, I can only provide information from 29/195 episodes. From those 29 episodes, I track 10 new wedge variants. So, let's get started with what will be my 50th overall Prize Wedge! #50: VIDEO (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-VIDEO-S3 This would be the second VIDEO wedge variant, and it would completely replace the original Season 1 variant as of its first appearance in [S3-E461 Helen/Anna/Gene 12/23/1985]. It would make one known appearance in Season 4, and then it would make its third and last known appearance in [S5-E887 Joe/Missy/Annette 2/18/1988]. After that, it was replaced by a number of simultaneously-used variants in Season 6. Overall, the text fills the wedge much more fully than the first variant, leaving much less dead space. I'd consider this an improvement from a visual design standpoint. VIDEO comes from the Latin word meaning "to see". So, let's go ahead and see the new VIDEO wedge on the wheel.

#51: TRUCK (Season 3) Duke's ID: PRIZE-TRUCK-S3 Now that we've had a CAR wedge, it only makes sense to have a TRUCK wedge. TRUCK was known to be featured at least 14 times. This particular variant was used at least 4 times between Season 3 and Season 5, with its first appearance in [S3-E463 Mike/Anita/Mary 12/25/1985], and its last appearance in [S5-E828 Marie/Laura/Kevin 11/18/1987]. It was replaced by a pair of TRUCK wedge variants in Season 6. The TRUCK was often a five-figure prize, putting it up there with CAR in value. A close look at video sources for this wedge variant show that the wedge comes up a bit short. It does not completely cover the wedge beneath it, and the inner and outer radius are also off, as though the wedge was made for a slightly differently sized wheel. A couple of other wedges from this era also seemed to share this same defect. Also, as with other several wedges in this era, some of the letters (T and R) have been elongated horizontally. (I chose not to model the wedge size difference, as having prize wedges of different sizes in my game would drive me bonkers.) Let me TRUCK this new wedge over to the wheel.
