There have been people who got the call without getting the letter, right? Right?

Yeah... shortly after their auditions.
I've even seen at least one account of people being asked to fly out to tape AT the auditions.

Helloooo! Newbie here - I just went to the San Antonio wheelmobile event on 12/13/14, and now I'm all freaking out and kicking myself that maybe I blew my big chance ;-) So, asking for a little expert advice from y'all.... I made it up on stage in the third round - big excited jump when my name was called, so that was good, but then the 6 hours of no food and extra caffeine kicked the adrenaline into hyper-drive. I definitely talked, but maybe rambled??? Plus, I'm not used to talking to someone I don't know as close as Marty stands (with his arm around the women), so I didn't know if I should talk to him, or more toward the audience...(I was alone, so nobody to give me objective feedback). Told where I was from in Texas, and also that I grew up in So. Cal. (oh, yeah? what part?), blah blah, so I think that was good, but then the old "I remember Pat from before Wheel, when he was the local weatherman..." (think this was a mistake???) Then Marty asked who I drove out with ("nobody, just me") Was he fishing for a couple's look??? Called good letters, but the puzzle (A Snap Decision) was solved before it made its way back to me. Then I collected my minipak and left. Should I have stuck around? I've read about people who were told afterward that they would be hearing from someone...I didn't even think to talk to any of the people working there Then I saw some YouTube clips of people's auditions that look like they do this every day! So, what do you think? Blew it? Do they call back many that make it onstage, or do they pick more from the random stack of applications? Oh, this is going to be a looong few months! Thanks for any insights any of you might have!!!!! Removed unnecessary markup. The default font and size work perfectly fine.

^ I think mentioning that you knew Pat before he was famous was a good idea. They don't like people who just say "Oh, I'm a big fan of the show", but something more specific like that should be good. Some of the interviews run a bit long, but if you don't think it was too long, then you probably did well there.
If you called good letters and presented yourself to your best, then you're probably in it. I've never heard of being told to stick around at a Wheelmobile event, only at the next level of audition.
Watch your e-mail and mailbox. The first time I made it onstage, I got a letter to the second audition, which I passed, but they never called me for the show. The second time I made it onstage, I got an e-mail for the second audition instead. Either will come about 2 months later.
I'm not sure whether they draw more from the people who get onstage or the people who don't; that probably depends on how good a group they think they got onstage. Personally, I thought the one I went to in Detroit earlier this year (mostly for funsies) had a mostly terrible group of people who got onstage, but I've already seen about three Detroiters on the show...

I think the surprise of getting my name called after standing around for 4 hours really got my nerves up more than I expected. I used to lecture to college students, so not a problem talking in front of people - just the sudden "You're ON!" aspect ;-) Hope I get called back - at least then I'll *know* I have to perform and won't be surprised. I'll let y'all know if I hear from them!

In the event that you're called to play during one of the first two sessions, and, say, you don't win, is it wise to still hang around and try to get on stage again?

I'd still hang around just to watch other people play, for the play-along factor, and compare how you did in a variety of aspects. But it's not based upon so much if you solved or not this round, it seems like it's more personality based in this round of auditioning, assuming you played the maingame logically, with decent picks, reasonable solves if applicable, etc.
If you've gotten on stage, you shouldn't drop your name in after that; if/when they catch you, they'll automatically take you out of the player's pool, as you're unfairly stacking the odds in your favor, so that less people could have a turn. Marty alluded something like this to the crowd at the last event I went to so yeah, I wouldn't do it.

Not sure if this has been asked or not...but what are some things you shouldn't say? I've heard not to say, "It's always been a dream of mine to be on Wheel..." or, "It's an item on my bucket list..." I'm afraid that if I get called up on stage, I would say something pretty dumb..,

Another question regarding Wheelmobile events - I'm hoping to go to one that's all ages (aka, not a casino). Unless I make arrangements, though, my still-little kids will be with me. Will this be a problem? Has anyone seen kids at a Wheelmobile event?

Sure have! You know that picture of the cardboard Wheelmobile being held in the original post? That wasn't held by me, nor is it a stock image, but rather it's a picture I snapped at my event of a 6 or 7 year old kid holding it. As my event was at a mall, and lots of people came and went at their own leisure, we had a fair share of kids. They'll be most certainly welcomed; heck I think I've seen a few strollers over the years, nor just at my event, but other clips I've seen of them. You should be fine. Best of luck; hopefully you get picked at the Wheelmobile event, and then get to move on to the audition!

Awesome! Thanks so much. Strollers was exactly the key word I needed to see Now I just have to wait for my kid's soccer schedule to come out to make sure I can make it. And then if I can, I have to cross my fingers that I get up on stage during the first round of games because I have to be at a friend's wedding stuff the entire rest of the weekend. If it was any other weekend I would just camp out until I got on stage! If I do make it to the wheelmobile event, I will of course report back. This website is awesome - so glad it exists!

I'm going to the event in Austin tomorrow. Been looking over the puzzles listed here just in case.
I doubt it will even come up, but would it be a good thing or a bad thing to mention that I am a member of this site? I'm guessing it's not as bad as Golden Road and The Price is Right, in which you really have to keep your mouth shut, but I just wanted to check anyways.
Looking forward to a good time tomorrow, and getting picked would be nice too!

I'd avoid mentioning it, but if you feel like it, go ahead. Marty follows our Twitter account, so I don't know if mentioning it especially to him would hurt your chances or something. And remember, unless you want to do it, absolutely avoid using the words "sing" and "dance" if you get on stage. ("Did you say...DANCE?!") Have fun and good luck!

I've been curious about this: if you mention to Marty that you've got a talent, there's a good chance he'll somehow coerce you into doing it. I know that. ...But what if you refuse? You get kicked off or something? I mean, the contestants almost never do said talents on the show itself...

They usually can't sing or dance on the show for various reasons: copyright, your whole body isn't visible, takes up more time, etc.
If you refuse, Marty and the crowd will keep egging you on until you finally comply. There's really no way of getting out of it.

There's really no way of getting out of it. That and IMO it hurts your chances of going to the final auditions. If you mention you like to sing, then freeze up after being asked to give a few notes and can't be outgoing at the Wheelmobile, will this hesitancy transfer to the final auditions? Taping day? I'm not saying you have to dance like Fred Astaire or sing like Judy Garland (wow do I sound old with these references), but they want to see if you can be loose and have fun.........if you bring it up. If you don't want to sing or dance or tell jokes or whatever in front of the crowd........DON'T BRING IT UP!

I was at the first round in Austin today - That group must have gotten the memo, because the only person who mentioned singing was previously in the Notre Dame glee club, and cheerfully broke out into some kind of pep rally type song when asked. No one else mentioned a stage talent, although one guy grabbed Marty in a bear hug.
Neither my friend nor I made it on stage, and she stayed for another show (I couldn't.). The most common occupation of those on stage was "retired". I'll have a full report with pics in a few days.

I was at the second and third rounds in Austin on Saturday. There was plenty of singing and showing off in those rounds. I was not picked, but I had a good time (although I forgot to bring a chair and my feet hurt severely at the end of the day).
I'll also have a full report and pictures later.
