What would you say were some of the most infamous puzzles (for whatever reason(s)) the show has used over the years.
I'll start with these:
KILL THE UMPIRE (missolved as KILL THE VAMPIRE)
A GROUP OF WELL-WISHERS (missolved as A GROUP OF PILL-PUSHERS)
FINGERS & TOES (missolved as MINERS & HOES)
REGIS PHILBIN & KELLY RIPA (missolved as every possible pronounceiation)
EXCLUSIVE NIGHTCLUB (contestant fails to solve it with only 2 letters missing, the X and V. She also had the Oreo $10,000 wedge....and it was also a prize puzzle. Total fail.)

the Thrill of Victory/Agony of defeat one from early in the syndicated run, if not for the sheer amount of cash - even for the mid 80s

^Ah yes, THE THRILL OF VICTORY AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT from December 5, 1985.
Is this episode available online. I've always wanted to see it.

The early bird catches the worm.
1st Missolve: The earth bird catches the worm. 2nd Missolve: The early bird gathers the worm.
By the way, speaking of infamous puzzles, I know of one "infamous" nighttime Season 6 puzzle under the category Same Name. It wasn't missolved but had a minor obscenity.

The Season 12 Megaword puzzle OXIDIZED, if you couldn't figure out why.
The Season 23 Bonus Puzzle BIG GULP, if only for Pat calling it out for being improperly categorized as On The Menu.
I'm guessing the Season 32 Bonus Puzzle WITHOUT A DOUBT could be argued as infamous.

FANCY THAT... and the missolve which had to be bleeped out. I don't remember this. When did this happen?

Haha! Pat's reaction is what made that all the much funnier! Removed quoted video.

The Season 23 Bonus Puzzle BIG GULP, if only for Pat calling it out for being improperly categorized as On The Menu. I didn't remember Pat himself commenting on the category. Just another reason that should've been Food & Drink all along.

^I agree. ON THE MENU as a category was not a very well thought out idea.

Oh boy, lemme see what I can think of. In chronological order: * MARILYN MONROE'S LAST FILM - a Clue puzzle from October 8, 1992 where the first given answer of Something's Got To Give wasn't accepted, but The Misfits was. After the next commercial break, Pat noted that while the former was the last movie Monroe worked on, the puzzle was implying her last completed film. Didn't affect the final outcome, but definitely an infamous puzzle for me since they really should've allowed for both answers and the "it implied this" remark made no sense. * HOT WAX - the Bonus Round puzzle from the 5,000th syndicated episode (February 27, 2009), which proceeded to add insult to injury by resulting in a $100,000 loss. Evidently, Harry didn't get the memo that milestone shows are where you want to give stuff away (not that the rest of the episode was much better). * HICKORY-SMOKED COUNTRY HAM - from December 20, 2012. On my list not because the contestant missolved (he left off the D, also the only letter not revealed) yet was still given credit, but because the show's mistake got very little attention at all...probably because the mass media were still fuming over the SEVEN SWANS A-SWIMMING missolve from the previous night (where the show had made the right call). * EVOLVING - the Bonus Round puzzle from March 18, 2014, infamous because it was shoved into What Are You Doing? Yes, really.
