I have a question about a prizes offered in the 1990s. I was looking on Google Groups at these.
On 4/26/1994, contestant Lynda loses a "Grand Banquet" in the Bonus Round? What's a Grand Banquet? Is it some fancy vacation or something?

Is it possible for a contestant to change their decision to spin/buy/solve if they've already declared what they want to do? Examples:
1. Contestant chooses to solve. They say PART of the solution, but decide they want to spin. 2. Contestant chooses to solve, but doesn't say anything. Wants to by a vowel. 3. Wants to buy a vowel, but decides to solve/spin instead.

I'm pretty sure I remember #2 happening fairly recently, though I think it was a spin rather than a vowel buy and I don't recall the date.
If I had to guess, I'd say 2 and 3 are possible, as long as they don't actually execute the first action they asked for (start solving or name the vowel they intended to buy). #1 I'm pretty sure is right out... once you start a solve, you're gonna be expected to finish.

According to this, right after his mother died. No idea when that was, though. Wikipedia (citing the aforementioned page of his book) says he played in 1980 as Ron Hyatt, his real name. His winnings included a trip to Mazatlán. Having a porn star as a contestant must have made it a really awkward taping for the staff.

Are contestants allowed to spin the wheel by pushing it multiple times before letting it go, like on some foreign versions?

"Winding up" the Wheel by pushing it multiple times before letting it go is highly discouraged. The CC's encouraged us to spin the Wheel in one smooth motion. Besides, the Wheel is so heavy that "winding it up" won't do anything. The Wheel can spin counterclockwise, but it wasn't really designed to do so. Contestants are told to reach out as far as possible (past your opponent's flipper, if need be), pull the spoke toward their own flipper, then push it past the flipper, holding on to it as long as possible. This ensures a smooth, fast spin. Contestants get a LOT of practice with the Wheel.

So I imagine they discourage people pushing counterclockwise to get a stronger pull, like some people did back in the day (especially many of the kids on Wheel 2000)? I remember doing that in the N64 game all the time.

Oh, yeah. I do remember the "pushback" in the N64 game, but the motion of pushing then suddenly pulling something so heavy doesn't really help much. The momentum for your spin comes from the initial pull, and you use that momentum to push the Wheel and send it on its way. It took me a little while to perfect it, but once we got started with taping, I was able to get the Wheel almost all the way around.

When did they start pre-setting the Wheel at the top of the game?

I read recently on the wiki about the Ohio State Fair shows that some stations in Ohio aired to start Season 1. Did any of those ever air on GSN? Do any of them circulate on the tape trading circuit, for that matter?

Not that anyone seems to be aware of, on either count.

S25 premiere week: 25 Wedge in R1-2, Big Money Wedge in R3 Rest of S25: $2500 in R1, 25 Wedge in R2, Big Money Wedge in R3 S26: MDW in R1, Jackpot in R2, Mystery next to LAT in R3 S27 Vegas episodes: Free Play in R1-3 Rest of S27 onward: Always top dollar value

How wide is the armrest above the podiums?

I'm not sure if this was asked before, but I remember there was an early version of the Surprise wedge back in the 80s or early 90s. It was a light green prize wedge represented by 3 question marks arranged vertically. I believe it was short-lived, but it was probably a sign of what's to come in 1992. Does anybody know around when the "real" Version 1.0 of the Surprise wedge (with the 3 question marks on it) debuted?

How wide is the armrest above the podiums? I'd say no more than one or two feet. It's just wide enough to lay your hands on it, then use it to rest your body when leaning over to spin. Also, the edge of the armrest actually extends a couple inches over the Wheel. You grip that portion with your left hand to brace yourself while spinning with your right hand.

Hmm, I have NEVER heard of the Surprise wedge with question marks on it... to my knowledge, it only ever displayed the word SURPRISE in black against a pink/magenta background... and the only wedge I've ever heard of to use question marks would be the Mystery Wedges... ringing bells for anyone else here, maybe?
