- Are contestants explicitly told to space out the words more when solving the puzzle than when using normal speech
Yes! We were told to punch each word, do not drop or add an "s" or "ing". We were given examples of how to say the solves.

Were you guys also told not to put an "a" or "an" in front unless it was already present in the puzzle? That's a rule they've applied rather inconsistently over the years, and I've seen a 1985 episode where Pat said it's okay to add "a" or "an" when solving. /surprised Word Punchers didn't catch on

Pat said it's only OK to add "a" when he asks "What is it?", "What is this Thing?", etc.

Where is there evidence that the Season 18 episode with "WHEEL OF FORTUNE" as the second Toss-Up aired April 2, 2001 ("Travel USA" week)? I've only seen the date noted on the Wiki and on TV Tropes before that. I don't see any concrete evidence of the exact date or day of the week in the copy that's online.

Most likely someone who remembered the date. I generally trust people when they put a precise date on something.

Was it the second toss-up? I vaguely remember this episode and I could have sworn it was the third one.

^ It was late Season 18, and they only had two Toss-Ups then.

I didn't see anything on ATGS about it.

Had to be. The episode I linked above was definitely from Season 18. I've also seen listings online for one in S21 (March 22-26, 2004).
Wow, that episode guide has the list of every theme week dating back to November 2001. Nice find.

10/24/08 has a $100,000 win where, during the announcement, the camera pans across the back of the audience as is done in the opening. Did they do pans like this on any other BR wins? I don't recall them doing it.

Were the Gill Sans category strips the last ones to be used for multiple seasons until Season 25?

Actually, no. The blue oval strip was used from late 1996-2001. It was updated slightly in September 1997 and then again in September 2000.

I've been trying to come up with puzzles that use every tile on the puzzleboard when this question entered my mind... has the rightmost tile on the fourth row ever been used?
