Not sure if this was shared prior to BuzzerBlog's reporting, but electronics supervisor Bill Monk was interviewed by Bob Boden back in December for the Strong Museum's National Archives of Game Show History. He confirms that the new puzzleboard has been in the works for the better part of a year, if not longer. It will indeed consist of an LED display (or seamless display matrix) together with Lidar sensors that detect the proximity of Vanna's hand/finger to the area needed activate the letter. The main reason for the switch, Monk says, was because manufacturers of different components have been less accessible, mainly due to these companies folding or the individual components no longer being produced. The producers wanted to upgrade the technology now to get ahead of potential problems that could limit their ability to rapidly fix issues associated with the obsolete technologies.
Skip to 1:18:36 for (very) brief specifics on the new puzzleboard technology:
Bill also talks about his work on Wheel in more depth from 1:15:25 and for the next several minutes. Earlier in the interview, around 46:30, he mentions that an LED-based wheel with randomized amounts has been considered in the past. He also mentions that he was the person responsible for finding the flat touch-sensitive switches adorned to each monitor that activate the letters in the (now apparently obsolete) electronic board.

Another glimpse of the new title card, from a tweet with Pat and Maggie:
Plus this promo (I do appreciate they used "season" instead of "anniversary", since we know the show really started in '75):

Yeah. For Seasons 10, 20, 25, 30, and 35, they said "anniversary". The actual anniversary of the nighttime show comes the year after.

Yeah. For Seasons 10, 20, 25, 30, and 35, they said "anniversary". For the seasons ending in 5 or 0, they call an "anniversary season" since they're milestones. Wheel isn't the only show that does this; Jeopardy! did the same, so did The Price is Right.

Though it may be too early to tell, hopefully we will see creativeness from Bellamie and/or Steve as the season progresses. My greatest desire they will honor 40 years of primetime with something worthwhile.

^The only real way they've honored anniversary seasons is through showing clips during episodes and they did retrospective episodes rather than regular gameplay for the 3,000th and 4,000th episodes, but they've never done a tournament bringing back the best players from the past seasons like Jeopardy or a primetime special like The Price is Right. If it also ends up being Pat and/or Vanna's final season I could see something more special to honor 40 years, but otherwise my guess is clips will continue being the way to celebrate.

There was going to be a tournament for Season 39, but it got canceled due to Mike Richards being fired.

I hope so, because it looks terrible. So what would be the reasons why Neutraface would be a bad font choice for Wheel? Because Neutraface is a bad font, period. The letter strokes are too wide to be appropriate for use on the puzzleboard.

Sony will never hire you if your head is stuck in the distant past.
The only things that changed on the physical puzzleboard were 52 monitors turned into one giant screen and the method of touching the board going from strips to LIDAR. That is a significant step forward in technology, yet I guarantee you that you wouldn't realize it was different at a moment's glance.
You want to intentionally use obsoleting technology instead of something more adaptable in the long term? That's silly. What else are you going to defend, Pat not spinning the wheel is a bad thing because it's always been that way and change is bad?

How about let’s all just stop arguing cause I don’t wanna get in trouble, I’m sorry for causing this madness, I don’t like change, well unless some changes of the way they look and sound and feel are good, some are not though, let’s just take deep breath’s and act positive, deal?

you keep starting these arguments with what amounts to "change is bad, no matter what"
to be fair, at least you're not asking for Shopping to return (edited remark)
